I've lot of videos (trailers, tv-shows etc.) made for N80 which I've encoded using the Smartmovie encoder which came with the application (from Lonelycatgames company). It's supposed to be with some sort of Divx/xvid codec (IMO). Is there anyway to play those directly using the N800 mplayer or builtin mediaplayer? The built-in player doesn't recognize the file because it is .avi and the mplayer opens it but the the quality is horrible. Basically there is no picture at all, just weird mixture of colors that seems to be moving randomly on the screen. Once in a while I see some recognizable thing amongst the mess but basically not usable. Canola does the same thing like mplayer. Is there anyway to add some required codec for mplayer to use? Or is there any other alternative player which is able to handle this? I'm sure some of you must have the Smartmovie encoded files for your S60 phones..... BTW, the DivX player for S60 plays those files fine on the phone besides the Smartmovie player.

If you're using Windows, try converting them using the latest Internet Tablet Video Converter. It seems simple to use, converts files fairly quickly, and it might work for you. It's worth a try anyway.

That's what I was afraid of. Convert again with another converter. That means the quality will further degrade. As it is, the files are of very small resolution (made for the S60 phone display). The whole point was to use a slightly bigger screen instead of the phone screen to watch those same videos. It is not very easy to place the phone on the table so that couple of people can watch from the same screen. But with the wide viewing angle of IT, this shouldn't be a problem. That is the only reason I want to play those clips from the IT screen instead of phone screen. I'm anyway using those clips directly from the phone screen if I'm watching them alone. This is the reason, I wouldn't like to indulge in the re-encoding step to have a duplicate set of all the videos (one for phone and one for IT). Even the idea of converting several hundred clips to yet another version, gives me shivers!

If only there could be support for the codec that is used to make those files for the S60 phone, I wouldn't need to re-encode them. Normally encoding is done for that kind of material which is too big in resolution or too heavy for the CPU capacity (like DVD or HD material). The file resolution and the processor capacity requirement in this case are certainly withing the limits of the IT. The codec is also supposed to be DivX/xvid.

Please see this link for the information on the codecs. It says that the K-Lite or ffdshow pack should be enough to play this movie. And as I understood from some other thread, mplayer should have the support for the codecs packed with ffdshow.

Anyone?? Please tell me that I'm not the only one who is using both NIT and S60 phone..... Smartmovie from LCG is single best converter in terms of ease of use for the S60 devices. And in last few years of my S60 usage, I've now a fairly large collection of old serials, movies, trailers etc. to watch "on the go" with my phone.

I have Smartmovie for my Nokia 9300 and the converted content plays extraordinarily well (on the 9300) and is very compact compared to other converters.

I believe that they use an Xvid (or DivX) codec in their player.

I also like their player features (brightness, volume control and resume on reopening).

rdcinhou: Can you play the same file on your tablet without re-encoding? That's the point of this whole thread. I can play the files very well on my phone. Now I would like to put the same file on the N800 and play it from there instead of converting it again....

No, I cannot play the SmartMovie encoded .avi on my N800 without re-encoding. It says "Format not supported."

I would say that the proper procedure woulf be to try the suggested re-encode on one movie, THEN complain about the lack of quality, rather than complain first.

This is why I stopped using Smartmovie and switched to converting everything into mp4.
