I'm using an N800, and had modified the console version of the game 'angband' to be able to play it on the N800 on the train. It needed at least an 80x24 console in order to use it - which meant that osso-xterm-advanced with 10pt mono font in full screen worked nicely. It also uses many combinations of ctrl-<key>, so the right-hand-side toolbar in osso-xterm-advanced was perfect.

It worked, and was good.

I've just upgraded to OS2008, and now it doesn't work. With the toolbar on, it is not possible to get a 24 line terminal - the toolbar restricts the height too much with the onscreen toolbar - even if the font is reduced to 8pt. Without the toolbar, it appears to be impossible to save, exit, check level feelings, previous messages, or anything else that needs to use the Ctrl key.

Have I missed something, or is it really impossible to access the Ctrl ky without the toolbar?

Why was the toolbar locked to the bottom of a wide-screen terminal, when screen height is the most-limited resource? Why did access to modifier keys outside the toolbar vanish?

Are there any plans to address these issues, like making the toolbar placement optional? Restoring Ctrl-key menu access?

I haven't upgraded to the OS2008 yet. But until OS2007 there was no way to access the Ctrl-keys without using the ugly tooolbar hack. I can't believe they still haven't fixed this. But it seems to be easier to port KDE to N800 than implement a proper software keyboard.
