Hi,

How can I create a backup of the root partition of my N9 please?

It seems to be easy with a N900 (https://metalab.at/wiki/Hack-A-N900/...e_rootfs_Image) but / is mounted on /dev/root, that does not exist...

TIA for any help, Peter

You can do that with ubiboot maintanance mode. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=89345

In maintanance mode all partitions of device can be exported to external computer via USB so you can use tar to archive your Harmattan rootfs.

Thanks. But it seems to be quite complicated. I'm looking for a very easy method for restoring.

IMO, the easiest method would be:

"flasher -fF backup-file.bin" on a brand new N9.

If it is not possible to create such a "backup-file.bin", would the following
scenario be possible:

- get new N9
- enable SDK mode
- install rsync
- "rsync -a --delete backup-server:/N9-backup /" (or similar)

If yes, I would do the backup with rsync instead of dd.

TIA for any hints, Peter

Hi.

wiki.maemo.org/Ubiboot

Looks complicated at first, but setting it up is just one-time. Once done, "maintenance mode" feature of Ubiboot is nice.

I am fairly sure you cannot rsync a live rootfs. Too much going on there, also the /proc /sys etc. will hinger you.

You could try to mount your mmcblk0p2 to another place, and then rsync/tar it, maybe that would work?

As for ubiboot maintanance mode, if you do not want to install it permanently, you can just run the kernel with flasher, it will work and nothing permanent happens (well nothing except your device going to open mode, if it was not like that before)
For that, you do not need the cpio even, just the kernel is enough.
