I couldn't get pass the firmware download mainly it doesn't exist and takes too long, about 9 hours to get the file to download.

Do recommend some local phone repair store? I don't mind having to pay a small fee to retrieve some lost information.

I don't see the problem?

1. get winflasher from here and install it

2. open up your N9's sim tray and look for the product code...
3. get the corresponding firmware image from here
(It's the one about 1.1-1.2 gig in size, e.g Dfl61 Harmattan 40.2012.21-3 Pr Legacy 005-oem1-958 Arm.bin)

4.move the image into the Flasher folder where the flasher.exe is located and run a CMD (with admin permissions!!!)

5. in CMD goto the Flasher folder (with flasher.exe and your firmware image) and start flashing using the comprehensive firmware flashing guide...

READ THE GUIDE CAREFULLY!!!
you may want to use flasher like this to replace just the N9's OS and keep your user data
Code:
flasher -f -F main.bin

ofcourse the problem here is that flashing main.bin wipes your contacts, and he was trying to save them.

Afaik flashing main.bin doesn't remove your contacts... (not 100% sure!)
Besides, you don't need linux to flash your N9
Thats why it's called winflasher

keep in mind that I'm not a 100% certain that flashing only the firmware won't delete your contacts! don't hold me responsible

to find out which firmware image is the right one you need to open and look at the sim tray!

there should be a product code. somthing like this 059****

download the right firmware and off you go

PS sorry for the delay, was out buying groceries...

http://nds2.fdsfire.nokia.com/p/d/fd...M1-958_ARM.bin

opened it and it was a video for GLEE season 4 :-(
