Another toy might be JWM - a yet more lightweight window manager, that could be good for the IT's.
But, one thing that I'd like is running those wm's in a separate window - needs a port of xnest or xephyr for the tablet. I do not have the skills to make it - but who knows?

Loads, runs, looks interesting.
Logging out gets me oblivion, though.
Requires reboot.

You know if anyone has FVWM2 out? that's my traditional pick...
But this looks great. I'll have to try it, when I get a chance. My dislike for KDE, and my certainty that, while maybe not dog-slow, it would be anything but snappy, prevented me on that. But I'll try this.

Re: N810 only, BT keyboard was already suggested. Also, xkbd should work, no? I already have that installed, so I should just have to make sure it's accessible from the icewm panel... We'll see how it goes!

Debernardis: Someone did this before with Xvnc and vncviewer. Probably Xnest would be a slightly better (more efficient) way, but there's a thread around here regarding that technique, so it might be easier to do.

With regard to the logout, I too had the problem of it hanging. I edited /usr/bin/icemaemo and take the backgrounding off of /usr/bin/icewm-session and put /usr/local/bin/startmaemo at the end of the file, so it looks like this :

export PATH="/usr/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin"

/usr/bin/icewm-session

/usr/local/bin/startmaemo

I'm not 100% sure this is the proper solution, but it does fix the problem for me.

I'm having trouble starting up some of the stock apps under ICEWM. The menu entry for modest doesn't work for me, but running 'modest -showui' does so that is a simple fix. But I'm really trying to get the microB web browser to start. Whenever I try to run 'browser', I get two windows with one blank and the other telling me it is "Updating" and it just stops there.

Is there anyway to bring up the included browser in ICEWM?

The only problem I had with hildon apps is that osso-xterm is a little big, but if you use the fullscreen button, it fits on the screen just like under hildon.

You could not get what browser to open? links? or you mean Hildon browser, "microb"? microb/opera will not work under any WM but matchbox that I could ever find

This is definetly faster than KDE, but nowhere near as functional. It does however provide a fast WM and is functional enough to be usefull.
If anyone would know, it would be the penguinbait, so I guess the answer would be no.

is there any "how-to" for recompiling various windoes manager for the n800 ?

given the tools, some ambitious DIYer may try to do it. Instead of begging for a WM we could ask for help or tips on how to sucessfuly recompile; this should be a lot less time consumming for PB and a lot more productive for all of us.

Honestly MOST window managers compile without any issues, as do many of the tools and apps needed for many window managers. There is no tricks to it. I started off because I wanted to run window maker, and it worked. I just kind of developed things from there. The best bet is to jump in and get stuck, then find a way around your problem.

Sorry no magic pills, but dive in the water is beautiful
