got my 810 the other day. came with a strange mount with a place to put my tablet (cr-89) then another piece that i connect it to, which has 4 holes in it, and then i have 4 self tapping "wood screws" and one bolt and washer to connect the two parts. does Nokia really expect me to use those wood screws to mount this to my dash?? wtf?!

Yes. Or they hope you'll buy their suction cup adaptor kit.

The four screws/holes seem to be some kind of standard for XM radios. I have a set of four holes for my handlebar audio system on my motorcycle (yes, the mount fits) but it uses machine screws.

If you already have an XM mount, I suspect that it would include the other screws. If you didn't, then you would use their wood screws.

I used an old bluetooth mount with suction cups with a hole in the middle between the halves for my car.

There's previously been discussion of the included mount in these fora. See this thread, for instance.

The four holes are arranged according to the AMPS standard, so almost any base you purchase will work with the mount. Nokia likely just throws in the self tapping screws as they don't add any real cost, and someone might use them.

AMPS mount makes it easy to attach to a ProClipsUSA mount, for example. I rather like the mount for the N810 - and wish my N800 came with one. The mount from ProClipsUSA was something like $30.

This has come up here many times. All you have to do is buy a base mount that works the way you want (suction, clamp, cupholder, etc) and connect the device mount to it. The hole pattern on the device mount is an industry standard. I picked my suction mount stalk up at Best Buy for about $30 USD, and it was extremely simple to adapt the Nokia device mount to it. Personally, I don't expect any device manufacturer to provide more than is found in the N810 box for mounting.

I'll actually be using the screws provided in the package. I have a custom mount that I built for my truck, it inserts into a space in the Dash and provides me a flat surface on which to mount my cellphone and now tablet mounts.

Thank you guys. I was looking for a mount. It looks like the correct search terms are "amps 4 hole mount".
Here's what I bought: $7.99 and no shipping!!

I picked up a vent-clip mount from Circuit City, and disassembled it and the Nokia mount until I had just the vent clips and just the n810 holder, and screwed those together. Works like a charm.
