Off-topic but no doubt of interest, here's what Canonical's been up to lately...
http://developer.ubuntu.com/2013/10/...r-smartphones/
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...u-1310-release
Still quite a bit further behind overall, but everything just seems more slickly tied together, at least that's the "impression".

True, but maybe not as hard as comparing prices is to you.
Comparing european VAT prices with tax free yankee prices is pointless. Thats not even taking into account all other extra costs in Europe. Nexus 5 is guaranteed to be way over 400 euros in Europe. Even the old Nexus 4 16gb is more expensive than Jolla.

It's been well substantiated (seem you've missed it again) why we most likely had "a" delay*, through the pointing to revealing articles in this thread.
*if you could honestly call it that, when it was always wildly optimistic

I'm not speaking in terms of the UX or sw-stack*, more-so in terms of how everything's being coordinated/communicated between them <-> usrs/devs as they move ahead.
But it could be just pure marketing rubbish....
*although there's aspects there that are appealing, plus some that very much aren't
