Does this abiword release support import of Microsoft Word or RTF documents?

RTF, yes. In theory, Word, yes, but the version of iconv included with the tablets is broken, and the version of wv (the Word access library for AbiWord) with the workaround for this brokenness hasn't been released on its own, so I haven't used that part. As such, many word documents will import as all ? (question marks). We know about it, we know the source of the breakage, and there is a workaround, it just hasn't been packaged yet.

Can you tell me more about this workaround, because i believe the problem with iconv is also causing a very similiar problem with the Gnumeric packages (formating in Excel-documents is totally wrong) - at least i have isolated that it might be somewhere inside the iconv_open()-function.

Regards,
Thomas

I don't personally know much about it, it's not my area, but here's the bug report with patch.

Thank you very much for the reply. Unfortunately i guess i will have to find a fix for libgsf myself, because the related calls to g_iconv_open() and iconv_open() are inside libgsf.

don't want to be rude or something, but is there any DEBs or Tarballs to try out Abiword?

Please read the rest of the thread before posting, at least the last few posts. Right now it's a closed beta to enhance bug reporting, to be completely clear about the status, and to prevent flames. If you'd like access, please PM me.

Ok sorry, I did read about beta and saw on garage the status 4 - Beta but didn't realize that there is a closed beta. Now I got the point, thanks!

This thread is so exciting that I got goosebumps reading it. Watching a bunch of guys get together and try to get Abiword compiled... and then seeing Ryan come in and invite them all to try the beta and file bug reports... and then watching development happen, right in front of my eyes... ooooh. This has become a subscribed thread.

I'm really eager for a working version of Abiword, but I can wait until you guys have it stable enough to make the beta public.

Glad to hear your excitement!

In related news, in trying to help someone with a question (apparently outside of here trying to build Abi - hadn't contacted me earlier in the process before, though, just used my instructions...) I realized there may be an issue with my build environment for Chinook. While this doesn't explain all problems, it might resolve a few installation issues, as well as a few hangs/crashes (which may have not been discovered) - basically, it looks like the Maemo VMWare SDK comes with messed up sources.list files for Chinook (they all say bora!)
