Perhaps there is some data on the card that is confusing the N800. If you have a card reader try formatting it in that.

I had problems with corruption on an older RS-MMC card until I reformatted it as FAT32 under Windows.

Have you tried with another SD? Maybe you have a damaged SD?

I've got 2 512 samsung cards, I tried both of them. I tried to format them with the N800, I thought that might be the issue, but it seems like anytime any card I put it in is accessed through either slot, it hangs. I tried reflashing to 2008 beta, no difference, then back to 2007, still doing the same thing. I am going to try reformatting on my computer and see if that helps. Thanks alot for the quick replies!

I had the same problem with you.But it is resoved now.
The solution is:

Don't put too many image files and media files on your card.If you had to zip it to one file.I guess some threads scan the file when you shutdown the unit.

You had to pull off the battery and press the power on button to reset the unit if it won't power on.

If I had 10000+ file on my CD card. 90% it won't boot up
After I cleaned all the file.Less than 5%.

Good luck

Unfortunately. I have the power-on problem even with an empty SD card.

It certainly seems like the N800 does a bunch of checks when the power button is pressed and if it doesn't like what it 'sees', it simply refuses to boot.

Hopefully this is a software problem, as has been suggested, and that it can fixed with an update.

I wonder what percentage of devices are doing this and how many are being returned to Nokia. Perhaps not enough for them to get a fix out quickly!

I've had it happen once after a fairly long charge. I unplugged the charger from the N800 and it wouldn't turn on. I removed the battery, replaced it, and it immediately came on as normal. I think the battery monitoring software gets confused sometimes, and removing and replacing the battery, or perhaps replacing the charger, wakes it up.

Mine won't power on at all now. Never had a problem with it before. With the AC in the charge icon comes up but does not animate and is at about 3/4 full. When trying to power up I get the Nokia logo then a screen dim and then the screen goes black. I have a password set and have removed both SD cards with the same results. I guess I'm reflashing and seeing what I get. I had left it paused on media player before this happened. If anyone can think of something else to try please let me know. Thanks.

I've got TWO N800 so far with similar power won't on problem.(The 1st one I got on Jan. 11 from an online store(NCIX), I sent it back, paid the shipping myself, got the 2nd one on Feb. 4).
I don't understand why so many ppl having the similar problem yet no one make the complain to nokia. And simply sent your old one back can NOT solve the problem. You might end up getting another defective device just like me. And nokia canada really sucks. They don't even admit this existing problem. see what they said:
"we are unable to duplicate the problems you are experiencing with
your Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Nokia does not comment on forums and
third party web site comments." Totally bureaucratic craps, and they asked me to send it to nokia US for repair, but they won't even send it back to canada after the fix because all n800 sold in canada are US model. I can only ask my friend in US to get it for me........
And I've contacted the retailer, they can only refund me for the device but I'll have to pay the shipping myself! I was so frustrated and angry and ............
I just checked the vote, out of 132 ppl, 55 have the similar power on problem, which is over 40%, yet nokia dosen't admit it!
So only if you guys all send a complain to nokia, it will take us customers seriously and try to find a fix quickly! And by the way, be careful about putting the device into a fridge, it'll void the warranty (I was told by a customer representative).

Or should we all try to file a group complain together?

By the way, for those considering buying N800, I highly recommend NOT to buy it, at least for now, it seems the whole batch(after 2008) is not right.

I'm wondering what OS you are running. Is it OS 2008 or 2007? I just got a replacement for my dead N800 and it is identical to my old one, with OS 2007. I've had no problems. . .

I have a better idea to help resolve these issues. Instead of whining about the problems, and expecting Nokia to do something about it it, what needs to be done is petition Nokia to open up the specs for the bootloader. I'm pretty certain all these issues are bootloader related. All the tablet boot problems can likely be solved with a simple cold flash.

I am working on making a serial cable to enable cold flash capability. Unfortunately right now that project is stalled due to the need for PogoPins to interface with the tablets pcb. If we can get cold flash working then it would be easy to say if your problem is due to the bootloader or a dead pcb battery.

The N800 requires power at all times in order to function. For those that don't believe this try taking one apart. In addition to the main battery there is also a backup battery on the pcb. It is also possible that in those tablets which have boot problems there is a bad backup battery. The simple fix for that is never to power off the tablet or let it lose battery power.
