Personally, in my travels on the internetz I've been regularly referring people to TMO*, since I've seen lots more folks asking Jolla/Sailfish-related questions.

*I rarely see major tech sites doing that

Mozilla is a 7 yrs old corp and started to do a commercial product a year ago or so.

I don't know if KDE has ever done a commercial product, at least I am not aware of.

We are talking about stories and companies which are a bit different than Jolla.

Jolla's main goal has been to deliver a device to the market based on Sailfish OS so we have put all the efforts there and of course we had to compromise somewhere.

In a perfect world with infinite resources everything is possible.

And this world is far from perfect.

It does, indeed. From the number of active members from Jolla staff it turns out that ~5% of company is active here. And in very constructive way. Which is great. Definitely much better than before device was lauched.

I was going to reply about that comparison too, just didn't have that time yesterday.

. I think it's unfair to compare the values of some foundations (or Community Interest Companies) with those of a company. There's a huge difference. Foundations have alot more leeway, they can be alot more ideological. They don't have the same primary goals than companies: to create profits for their shareholders. They are not held responsible to some third parties that absolute demand for their investment for you to pay off.

I think I'm going to post the other part of my post later, I have a lot in mind about this subject. Actually I think this discussion is fascinating and raises a lot of thoughts.

KDE are working on a product (Vivaldi tablet): http://rhombus-tech.net/community_id...e_tablet/news/
And they just launched the Improv development board: https://makeplaylive.com (see also https://makeplaylive.com/#/who-we-are/our-commitments ).
The tablet doesn't move fast for them, but not because they have open development or their code is open. It's just a lot of work. Openness doesn't hinder their progress.

While stories are somewhat different, resources seem rather comparable.

Some baseline comparison can be made still. If they don't cover their expenses and can't sustain the development, nothing would work out, whether it's a community interest company or not. So we should assume, that they all plan to be sustainable. How this translates into openness of code and development is a different question.

It's hard to be active when you don't have anything of substance to talk about (yet)

Wrong you can talk about anything before. Community are built around something like a device or brand. But things like "how many cups of coffee did you drink during your workday today" makes the community great. Please share...

I love speculations. My guess: 4
