N810 has a light sensor above the camera. The sensor is fairly decent (resolution of 1 lux in 1-50k+ lux range), and is accessible through software. light-meter is a very simple command-line tool to print the sensor's current reading.

[user@nokia ~]$ light-meter
1203 lux

yes, great apps ag2!

Any progress on getting battery-status not to start the
on screen battery-applet? I found the cron service for
the tablet and run a battery monitor script every 10 minutes.

I found that while watching a movie the battery applet
popped up annoyingly ...

Thanks for the cool apps and other apps on your web site. They are cool. I am NOT a camera professional. My only hobby is camera. The light meter is very sensitive and accurate. And the internal temparature are cool. This is the interesting part. I have N810 and N800. The temp measurement is always several degree C higher in the N800, 1.5 C to 2.0 C, they both are sitting on the desktop and has NO progs running. Interesting. A few clicks on some progs, the N800 temp ran up very quick while the N810 stays more or less the same. And my N800 has serious power on problem that has been attributed to temp. I will play with it and see. Again, ag2, thanks

Sorry but no. I believe talking through d-bus is the only option until Nokia open-sources its interface to BME (unlikely to happen).

Slightly off topic, but does anyone else think the light sensor on the N810 is in a bad location? I occasionally find my thumb obscuring it when I'm using the stylus, probably because that's where the old D-Pad used to be on the 770 and N800. Maybe I just need to condition myself to lower my thumb. It's a little annoying for the screen to dim in a bright ambient environment, just because my thumb is in the wrong place.

Yes, the light sensor location is dreadful.
I covered mine with gaff tape.

great, any idea how I can use this number? I've looked online on how to use a light meter, but nothing which shows how to use a lux number. Light meters give you a number based on the ISO speed of your camera.. at least, thats my understanding of it.

You can just type 'cat /sys/bus/i2c/devices/*/lux' instead of installing light-meter.
