Hello, everyone! I'm a newbie... just got my N810 this morning. I'm playing around with it but I'm having trouble with different text input methods.

I am using the device with the slide keyboard closed. From the text input settings I have selected all the options for on screen text input. If I tap a text field with my finger it does not open the big virtual keyboard as it should but opens the stylus style keyboard. This happens also with the stylus.

If I remove the stylus keyboard from the Text input settings and tap a text field with a finger nothing happens. So it seems that the device cannot decide wether I'm using the stylus or finger... I'm not getting the finger keyboard.

Sometimes when I get a grey bar at the bottom of the screen stating Abc on the right hand side. I have no idea what that one is... tried to type handwriting to that one but didn't work . I have absolutely no idea how the hand writing should work.

Any ideas?

Hello Masu!

Just out of interest, is there any particular reason why you want to use the on-screen keyboard instead of the N810's real keyboard?

The default on-screen keyboard is the small one, you can switch to the big keyboard by pressing the direction pad's button (aka the rocker button).

On the subject of the handwriting, you just write the letters one by one (NOT joined up), and it should automatically convert them into real text. If it makes a mistake, you can correct it and it will remember the correction for next time.

I did a tutorial on handwriting for OS 2007, the older tablet operating system, but it should help you with using OS 2008 on the N810:

Why the thumb-board - When I'm walking and want to jot a note it's easier than the stylus board or keyboard.
I often have to double tap to get the thumbboard up.
The handwriting recognition is far worse than the Compaq PDA I had 5 years ago.

Got it working... just didn't tap with my finger as quickly and firmly as I should have.

The on screen keyboard is very handy when for example using a navigator program (device in the car holder).

Good point about the car holder, hadn't thought of that!

IMHO the handwriting recognition works quite well if you correct every mistake, there usually aren't that many mistakes so it doesn't take long to get it to understand all your letters. But of course that depends on a person's handwriting, which can vary quite a lot from person to person...
