Nokia is officially dead. There is no more Nokia, no more Nokia devices, the legacy support is a joke, everything is back-peddling and transitioning into Microsoft services.
Enjoy a new Microsoft Lumia phone or tablet.
Nokia's 16000 industry leading patent portfolio is something investors have been seeking better return. Same goes for HERE that doesn't really sit all that well with the NSN side at the moment.
I do believe some people here are downplaying Nokia's capabilities to be a consumer device manufacturer once again with its core R&D with Nokia Research still being intact and not have the huge package of past in R&D or manufacturing. Something where Samsung will suffer next with its sharp decline on phone sales, with it owning much of the actual manufacturing process.
Once again though, I do not believe these consumer devices being smartphones. You could not enter the market in worse climate. If it ever would go to that, Nokia needs to stay away from Jolla, Qt etc. as far as possible, but I hope it does not ever go to that.
EDIT:
I just should add that what Tomi Ahonen is saying doesn't mean much. What text I have bee reading about him from old Nokia employee, much of his previous second hand stuff have been just pure lies.

Android? Big no. I never enjoyed Java, and Android does sound too restricted. Replicant may be more open, but still, Java is not something familiar. Do they have GNU Chess on Android? GNU Octave?
Jolla... Was curious. Heard their hardware is bit cheap. Playing on UI, colours and other halves, not the device itself.
Lumia? Big no. At least, as long as it has Microsoft Operating System Only. If it had hw qwerty keyboard, Pureview camera and was capable of running Nemo-Mer or Fremantle-Maemo, that would have been a different situation. And a different device, too.
Neo900... Crazy? Maybe. Hardware? Excellent. Operating system? FOSS-fremantle, maybe Nemo-Mer, SHR, Replicant, Debian, whatever... For the sake of continuity and legacy, I will likely choose FOSS-fremantle.
Firefox OS? So far, I have only seen a 'cheap' device running it. Maybe, there are high-end devices running it, too. Do they have a hw keyboard? Good camera? Is it possible to get GNU Chess, GNU Octave, espeak, pocketsphinx running under Firefox OS?
HTML is pleasant. But I doubt that porting all applications of the world to it would be an easy task.
iOS... Absolutely no. Shiny candy. Like pepper mint - not my choice.
BlackBerry... Touch-scroller is good. Better than four arrow-buttons and one OK button. Less moving parts means longer durability. HW is not that bad; maybe, I can get used to form-factor without slider and with permanently accessible hw qwerty keyboard. Do not forget to include good camera, and such (good audio, for example, is paramount, both for phone-calling and for music-recording). But, Operating System has to be either Fremantle-Maemo or Nemo-Mer. Possible? No?
Neo900 is an European tech company, too :-)

Is BlackBerry capable of an autonomous operation now? Wasn't there a case a couple of years ago when a BlackBerry server somewhere in the Land of the Free crashed or something and all the BBs around the world were crippled for a week?

yup...
not to mention...
people seem to conveniently forget...
what helped (if not outright) crashed bb to fall apart was to have multiple tyrannies/ dictatorships/ whatever gov't's demand access to it's secure communications system...so no one feels safe contacting anyone...
Sure I understand the need for security measures (in the broad sense) regionally or globally...but not at the direct cost to the innocent...by wicked regimes.
Sold out their customers and their security...
There's some spine eh?

Trust them?
Trust BB or M$ or Apple with my security?..my personal info?...where I go? ...what I do? ...whom I see or speak with?...

Blackberry's were fine and could do everything a Blackberry could, except the enterprise messaging through BBM (which is a big deal btw).
Blackberry devices are autonomous, but BBM services are not.
There are still people paid/staff who do maintenance etc etc.

Now its a bit like Lenovo's acquisition of IBM.
Sure IBM is still around, but is it really?
Nokia is dead like IBM is. And as much as a fanboy as I am, I have to say its for the better.
They couldn't innovate, execute and predict fast enough. Symbian was a joke. While BBX/PlayBook are great innovations. The latest iOS and Android are also very advanced.

I agree Nokia could probably have milked MS a bit more for the mobiles but the price they got was fair considering the sorry state it currently is.

Both of your example companies are now doing pretty fine having rid themselves of the problematic products and concentrating on better future products.
You make the common fallacy of equating a company/brand with a specifip product or range of products. A company dropping a branch that is making losses is a healthy one. A company throwing good money after bad is on its way to ruins.
