So, if I'm reading this right, you have only two devices total that you control remotely.
For this situation, I would agree with you, the wifi app will give you much greater depth of control than a simple IR controller ever could. (Or should I say apps? It sounds like you've got a plethora of apps here, one for the TV and several others for the hifi.)
But I've gotta wonder if this will scale up well. In my house, I've got three different TVs, two DVD players, a VCR, and a couple of Mac Minis, all of which I'm controlling via Pierogi. (Granted, I haven't used the VCR in years...) I suspect that many households have even more devices, many of which are not wifi-controllable. And even if every device can be controlled by wifi, having to wade through a dozen different apps will probably get as frustrating as having to manage a dozen different IR remote controls...
Well, yeah, IR does have the limitation that it can't pass through walls. But I should note that the N900 has a fairly weak IR LED; I've recently been working on a port of Pierogi to the HTC One phone, and it gets at least 2-3 times the range of my N900s. So, the range of a phone or tablet IR isn't necessarily as limited as you might think.

The whole "First one" aspect of it.
-They sent them almost randomly, no matter how early or late people had ordered them.
-had reserved far too little resources for shipping in general
-Weren't open about these distribution problems until there was a huge out cry among the supporters.
-Run out of the pre-order exclusive Other Halfs.
EDIT:
-Charged EU VAT from orders outside EU(Swiss&Norway)
-Their whole tech support & warranty issues were FUBAR for months
Thats just quickly from memory. There are about million cry and whine posts on this forum about the problems from around November - December 2013.

I'm not very interested in Sailfish and am mostly interested in the possibility of being able to fully utilise the hardware for running Debian (see my sig for my N900 project).

I'm not familiar with Android terminology so I wasn't able to make a lot of sense out of Stskeeps' response
Morpog_PC: understandable, but they also have to remember that if you say A) hwcomposer then you need to say B) gralloc and C) android libegl

Thanks!
Still, hopefully it still means it has an Intel GPU - even if Sailfish might not use an open driver due to needs of Alien Dalvik support (also speculation at the moment). But other distros, such as Nemo mobile, don't have such limitation.

I'm pretty sure you'll get some weird looks from iPhone users if you asked them if you could squirt your vcard at them.
Then again, Bluetooth doesn't work either.
