I already use "volumecontroldaemon" which allows me to squeeze that bit of extra power when listening to music.

But, when you do "alsamixer -c0" in the terminal, it still shows "-5.40dB".

Does this mean it is possible to milk that and get even more of an audio boost?

One of the reasons I still use my N900 is because the large storage (+ microSD!) and loud volume (at somewhat trade of quality, but nothing really noticeable for me) makes it a perfect MP3 player (and in my case, FLAC).

Forgive me if this question is newbish.

EDIT: Maybe this is better in Maemo 5 / Fremantle subforum? At the same time it does talk about hardware... mods, feel free to move if you think it is better.

By the way, did you check this post for this script (mod) which Increase bass boost, increase audio board output voltage and enhance audio ???

If you're talking about the "Beats for N900", the sound is definitely not my taste (very bass-esque feeling, and not exactly in a good way in my honest opinion), and gets distorted very quickly when increasing volume, while still not being louder than default 100% (just more clipping, making it distorted or something like that )

@Boemien
I just tried it (and already reverted), and it still showed -5.40dB when the volume was maxed out.

Does anyone have any idea if it is a meaningless number, or is it really possible to boost it a little bit more?

Perhaps you just need better headphones? I use mine at half volume both on the phone and on the inline volume control and they sound pretty loud (and very good too!).

Oh, mine are pretty loud, that's not the issue. I'm just wondering if it is possible to be even louder (mainly for some extra EQ "adjustment room" fun). I have no idea what these -5.40dB mean, and if it really is possible to change that to get closer to 0dB (max?), I don't know how.

Shameless bump, no one knows why it displays -5.40dB instead of 0.00dB?

With reference to what?

That's like saying "why it displays quarter instead of half". It all depends on what you're talking about.
