Last century I was using a 1024x768 screen on a 64MB notebook, had a full KDE 3.x desktop running on it. And it even managed to run Eclipse. 512MB is a luxury

Imagine trying to load a modern website on a device like that.
It could take 10+ minutes per page, assuming a modern browser wouldn't crash.

Everything is just too bloated these days. For the past few decades all the hardware advances given by Intel has been taken away shortly afterwards by Microsoft with their ever increasingly bloated Windows.

Not just Microsoft. Everyone bloats these days. Even on devices you would expect to be optimised for limited resources - like phones. I can't believe how bloated Jolla is, for example. It's a phone, FFS, and still runs out of memory with just a handful of apps open.

Some years ago I was helping a friend setup his new HP printer, when I got to installing the "drivers" I was shocked to see that it wants 300-400MB free disk space - I said to my friend WTF!?!
