I think it is worth mentioning as it may affect open-source software used on devices equipped with Wi-Fi.

Preventing the flashing of DD-WRT is specifically mentioned. Don't think I'd buy an access point that I couldn't flash Tomato on.

Routers and stuff are already a botnet, but now it's botnet 2.0 now we can't flash other/OSS firmware on it.

As I know our belowed establishment, the UK will follow suit shortly. If it hasn't already. Good job my 10 years old router is still going strong and I have no reason (or intention) to replace it.

I am afraid that some (most? all?) the producers would not want to create separated vesions of devices for USA (without flashing option) and for rest of the world (with it).
Worse, even differences of AC voltage are not a problem while most of the routers, all of the phones and tablets have external power supplies/chargers which can be exchanged easily depending on region.

Sadly, the only thing that these idiots understood was "properly authenticated software" and something like open source is considered a threat since "just anybody" can alter the software; a common issue with some folks that govern our devices in the FCC, et al.

Oh well. It'll probably be turned around just like unlocking phones was in the US.
