Let me guess. Because it's the same OS?

But yeah, if the manufacturer with some basic understanding of such things should work would implement those, then the end user's experience may be much smoother.
I really hope that one positive thing can come out of this downsizing. Jolla has a much reduced manpower, and can't maintain everything it was holding close before. They could keep the Silica and Lipstick stuff closed - I appreciate that it's a key piece of Sailfish that they can base their licensing on to get revenue. But the apps, there's no point in holding onto them. Tip them out onto Github, let us hack about at them and submit pull requests. Surely that's the one bit we can all work together on in a common interest, and if we make them awesome and innovative then we really could start showing Sailfish off.

How we could develop together is another question though. I don't think the open sourcing it's worked that well for the browser, for instance, and I don't know why.

Did you ever use a WP device (especially before 8.1) - FirefoxOS or Ubuntu - non of them cares about holes in the usability or the lack basic functionality.
By the way what is basic functionality? My girlfriend was happy for years with her N8 and now she is with my old Lumia - she doesn't miss anything because she doesn't even know it could be there. And that is how most users behave - the are using their device between 2 and 4 years as it is - without ever thinking about what could be if their phone could do this or that ... Most of them are happy if there is an app for what's app, Facebook a browser a mail client and a few games - ah and (in case of my girlfriend) a few nice themes ;-)

Back to Jolla, I'm using my Jolla as my daily driver - the workflow is good (beats android from my point of view) only things missing for me are copy text from emails (without workaround) and paste phone numbers in the dialer (that's really annoying as I get many phone numbers (I only need once or twice) per mail and don't want to add them to contacts ...

But all in all +1 for marketability

They definitely have to at least test it on the tablets (assuming they are pushing the new update for the tablets, that is)

Stupid question No:2

Ok, but if one is written for an Arm chip and ones written for an intel chip, does that not mean it has different coding, or is all shared?

Are there not different screen sizes between a tablet and a phone,

Are there not different hardware between the two?

- ok thats three stupid questions

You may need to write different code for different CPU architectures if you dig VERY deep down in the drivers etc. For everything else, you just need to run it through the compiler twice. I assume they have automated build systems for that. And for testing. If not, then that might explain some delays.

You have a valid point about the screen sizes though. Some UI bits have conditions based on the screen size. I would say ditch them and make it exactly the same but that's probably just me. So yes, the different screen sizes may add about 5% of the coding/testing effort.

Probably they have it already done *). It has been in testing and now they are trying to push it to the customers. The ~250 tablet owners are also customers so why not cater them when at this point required work is quite small.

Also the large development and porting work for tablets is mainly done so in the future releases it is more about testing work and having the build infrastructure for tablets.

*) It depends on company, market sector and product but it is normal to test product for weeks before releasing it. I know even some companies that test their products for 6 months and then release it as RCs and only after sufficiently large number of customers are running it, it will become GA.
