Oh, come on. Kamikaze planes weren't being flown towards undefended ships; they had to fly through massive clouds of anti-aircraft fire to reach their targets. A plane with a pilot that survives all the way to the end is much, much more likely to cause damage than a plane with a dead pilot.

There, I've solved the only mystery in life...
