I just bought the n800 to use in nursing school. I love it except for the fact that my drug books and other references are not being supported by it. I bought it with the understanding it supported third party programs. Any insight on programs, such as microsft wrd, that are able to be downloaded as an application to the tablet? I am feeling so fustrated, limited on time and money....HELP HELP HELP. I dont want to get a different type of PDA/Tablet/Computer, but it seems like that is turning out to be my only option.

Doc reader shall allow you to convert word docs in text or pdf format - but possibly some formatting and pictures could be lost. If you have reference materials in doc format, you better convert it by online services or on a desktop machine (i.e. with openoffice.org) in pdf, which you will be able to browse with your tablet.
The enclosed pdf reader does not allow searching, but if you need it (as I bet you do), you can install "evince".
If you need to make word processing, by now the simplest and safest option is to use the enclosed "notes" app which can save in html format - good to be imported in every modern wp. In the future, it's likely that abiword will be available (it's in beta stage now but still unusable for work), and that is a very nice wp with lots of import/export formats.
Use gnumeric for spreadsheets and simple databases - it's OK.
Use xournal for note taking by hand or for annotating pdf files. To have both gnumeric and xournal, there's a post of mine with a hack for it, until those applications modify their dependencies.
If you need to create office documents, there are more elaborate tricks. You can install kde as described by penguinbait, and you'll have the koffice suite of wp, sheet and slides creator. Or, as I did, install the basilisk II emulator of the old Apple mac computers, and search for a copy of microsoft office 4.2, which is cheap on ebay.

As you can see, there's no reason of being pessimistic... just ask for help!

You bought an Internet Tablet without first checking to confirm if there were document readers???

Here's my suggestions:

FBReader is an ebook reader that does a pretty decent job of handling my reference documents. The N800 also handles PDF pretty well, and seeing that I have Acrobat 8, I just have to make sure that it's compatible with older version of Acrobat, just to keep things simple and to prevent any new and unnecessary functions from choking the tablet

Your other option would be to get a Asus eeePC, which has document editing functionality which seems to be what you are looking for, rather than what you are supposed to be using an internet tablet for, i.e. on-the-go web experience for online reference, social networking, email, streaming video and music, offline video and music, etc, in a tablet form factor.

The iT, IMHO, is really not the ideal platform for document editing or composing large amounts of text, and the eeePC would be a better choice for that. However, as a mobile internet device / portable media player, it's more than adequate.

You can use Abiword to view (and edit) MS Word documents on the IT.

While I LOVE my N810 and use it as if it were my right arm... If I were buying a pocket device to be used in during nursing school/practice I would buy something like a Palm TX. You'll find tons of drug books, medical reference apps, MS Word apps etc. I doubt very seriously that you'll find any drug/medical reference apps for Maemo unless you make them yourself (like html for FBreader).

I've been a RN for 10 yrs and I'm currently studying to a Molecular Biologist - my N810 is always in my pocket when I'm in the lab/classroom - I do have quite a few scientific reference books made and I read pdf journal articles a lot. But whenever I work a shift at the hospital, I take my old Palm TX with me - I still use the medical reference books quite often.

Okay so I tried some of the things you suggested. I am definately not as computer savvy as everyone else seems t o be on here so please bear w ith me.... I downloaded evince to my n800, you said to do this to enable my searching capabilities through my text books right? I also tried the basilisk II emulator, downloaded it, finding the microsoft office is proving to be more difficult as just a direct download. I think the next problem I am going to encounter is the compatibility of my drug book and other medical references (the books I have came with the disks for uploading onto PDAs) with the n800. They say they are only Mac or Pc compatible and I have no idea how to convert/sync them so I can put them on a tablet. I dont plan on using the tablet for writing papers or anything, just quick references to my books. Any suggestions? Sorry if this sounds discombobulated, I am desperate not to get rid of this thing.

I really do like the n800, that is for sure. It has everything I could possibly want in terms of instant gratification.....except for the drugb book/reference thing. I am not sure how to do the html for FBreader thing, any tips? I looked at Palm, I am just not a fan of Pc, I always prefer my mac over everything else....a little jaded. Thanks for your help.

If you want a quick fix-it-now solution, you can just convert the Word documents to PDFs, which display nicely. If you're using a PC, install CutePDF Writer and "print" the documents to PDF files. If you're on a Mac, then just Print, hit the Preview button, and save your PDF.

This approach should work for any application with printing support, not just Word.
