Not exactly sure how I got myself into this position. But after having my device on for a while I can't open too many applications.. .I keep getting told that I have to close something else for an application to be opened. I'll have one app open and when I try to open another app it tells me i have to close the first one. Has anyone seen/experienced this problem and know how to rectify it?

Add some swap memory.

EDIT : In memory control panel.

This does not actually solve the problem it's just like someone would say: Oh, my bucket is full what should I do? And the answer would be: Hey, here's a larger bucket. Well, anyways I'm experiencing the same issue sometimes and this means that some apps are leaking memory. Booting the device will help.
