What I read today [1] as a reply to the question: Is it mandatory for Android phone manufacturers to release their ROM source code?

Hmm...Great question. If anything like this happens don't request, force! Sign a petition in change.org and get 2500+ votes. You do this and those people will HAVE to release them. Does it really work? 4000 votes and broadcomm had to reply! Launched the source code for bcm21553 in 10 days!
Maemo is no longer supported by Nokia. No new devices are being sold. No support anymore. They don't care about the platform anymore. Why don't we do the same as the Broadcom users?

We too could make a petition for Nokia/MS to release the source code for Maemo, at least for the userspace software.

Of course I mean the code Nokia/MS is permitted to release, not belonging to other parties.

Community Council: can you do it?
I'm asking for an official reply from the CC.

like your spirit but council has no such power. We would have a better chance when Nokia had community managers walking the streets of TMO, and even paying the bills. Now...

No...I guess Microsoft has the source now, if not deleted. Our hope is a leak!

Start it. I'm with you!

Unfortunately, this is the view of our Jolla fanboy admin, so basically it's a dead end to discuss here at tmo: https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?...&postcount=447

Anyway. Here you have some info...https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?...&postcount=384

Somehow like this https://www.change.org/p/nokia-meego...artphones-2017

Edit:
Yes I know that will never happen because Nokia, if at all, jump to Android. And then you need a device or a manufacture adopting this os, maintain it and so on.

First of all, I said about Nokia/MS-owned parts of the system. If they decide to open only the user interface - it's still fine, better than in the current situation.

The Community Council is the right body to represent the Maemo community. Not me.

Besides, the times have changed a lot since 2011. Back in 2011 the N9 was released.
HP didn't open source the webOS things until they decided to kill the OS.

Yes, but with libhybris over there they could use the same hardware for both MeeGo and Android. So it all boils down to "how many people want it"

Not cancelling my initial post request, but adding another, in parallel.

Community Council: can you please put this petition on a banner? It's more important to me than a banner advertising CSSU most people know about.

I , of course am all for signing a petition.
That being said Dave stated the sitch.
Nokia/MS hasn't released the closed parts in the past...
(even with all the off and on interest and asking that has occurred over the years here)
The one omission in Dave's post is that there was a great deal of collaboration Nokia did back in the day with other parties...
ie. Skype and the like... quite a few other parties are involved in the sitch in regards to opening up maemo.
They would balk at Nokia/MS just releasing their proprietary work.
I'm sure if it happened they would be lining up to sue Nokia/MS.

I think ... at best....very best...
to have the slimmest possibility of the releasing of maemo's closed source aspects...
My best suggestion would be to first get a hold of all the other players who participated .... and ask them to sign off on the release of their grip on their proprietary bits.
After getting all those ducks in a row...
After getting unanimous consent.
THEN head straight to Nokia/MS with those signed documents and the petitions list.
Then Nokia/MS is apt to release the closed source aspects...

But I am positive just walking up to Nokia/MS with a petition signed by 99% of the planet, every head of state, the risen prophets of every faith, the Devil and God themselves ..even... can't make Nokia/MS break binding contracts.

I am not dissing the op , nor his idea ,
But this is just walking down the same old track ...
asking, begging, petitioning or demanding in the same way....
with the same results.....
is just more pissing in the wind ...

Try a different tack.

Go after the players...
If that succeeds
and everyone complies..

then go after the corp.

If they still have the goods..
then there is no reason left for them not to comply..

Then we will get what we need.

Unfortunately there is no way to force the issue, whether by formal source code request or petition signed by 1000000 people.

The cases you quote, lava-something and broadcomm have in common that the requested code is a derivative work covered by GPL.

Nokia has already released the source code for the GPL derivative work of Maemo; namely the kernel of the device.

The parts that still are closed are not covered by GPL.

To quote my former self... won't happen. Hasn't happened for Maemo 4.1, won't happen to Maemo 5.0 mainly due to the proprietary drivers for the closed bits.

Scary part is making Microsoft aware that they have something that folks may actually want. They might lock it down even further. Or worse... add it to their ever-growing list of things that they have that they will find a way to exploit later.

Either way, it sucks. I disagree and would love to see it just put out there. Perhaps things have changed under Nadella than under Ballmer. It just cements the fact that Maemo was just never truly open. And I don't think that it will ever be fully open.

In the history of maemo.org has any petition succeeded in achieving its goals? Can someone name me one? Just asking...
