The website FlightAware (http://flightaware.com/) has live updates and information on every flight in the US. This could possibly be a feed source for an application that you described.
Or if not, it is still a cool site to look at what is going on in the skies.

I know you could just hit the aireline website..but maybe something that's like the om-weather applet.
