Guys,

I've got VNC viewer running beautifully from n800 to both PC and MAC connected to a Lacie 1TB Ethernet hard drive following instructions on ITT threads. My question is how to redirect the n800 to just work within the Lacie environment and not the PC or MAC evironments. Any ideas? On the PC I'm using TightVNC Server/Viewer and on the MAC I'm using VineServer/Viewer. I've setup a static IP address on the Lacie. Do I need to install a VNCServer within the Lacie hard drive and if so how?

I contacted Lacie and they said it's doable to be redirected work within the Lacie hard drive environment but they are not authorized to help with Linux although the Lacie doc's states that it was designed to work with Linux boxes(go figure). I've looked everywhere on these forums but none seem to address my connection issue. I've also done google and can't seem to find any answers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Dan

I don't know that the Lacie network drive is any different than other NAS devices-it's not the same type of user-interactive system that a regular computer is. Unless you can get into the firmware (likely Linux-based) which controls the Lacie drive and its web interface and modify it to use and run VNC on it, you''ll always need a host operating system such as that found on your Windoze PC or Mac. Some hardware firmware has room for modification, some has little, and it isn't always legally accessible.

I don't know specifically what you want to do- if you want access to the content on the drive, such as media files, you can use it as a UPnP server and stream the data to your tablet. If you want to access the share itself through the tablet file manager, there are ways to do that, but to VNC directly to it isn't quite the norm- it's designed to be leashed. All of what you can do via its web interface from your PC or Mac you can do from your tablet from its web browser, assuming you're on the same subnet of your home wireless network.

Maybe someone else has ventured into this; I personally don't see the benefit, but I also can't quite narrow down your intent. If you expand on your needs perhaps there are methods already being used which others could share to help you achieve your goals.

daveb70,

Thanks for your response.
I will try to clarify what I'm trying to do.
I want to be redirected to the data files on the Lacie Ethernet drive with minimal controling of the PC or Mac. Is this even possible? I just don't know much about this subject. VNC works well on both PC and MAC. I just would like to isolate the Lacie drive which has wireless capabilities built in(ethernet cable goes directly from the Lacie drive to router). Any suggestions, advice or help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks, Dan

This is as I expected, but assuming anything...

Although there is no concrete consistent process w/o a bit of manual work, you may want to check out this thread: http://internettablettalk.com/forums...ad.php?t=14909 and see what others are doing along the same lines.

I myself can see my Windoze shares from the File Manager on my N800 w/latest 2008 build, something I did not see on my 2007HE-based N770. I cannot access the shares at this time, but I'll poke around some in the next couple of days and see what I come up with. If your Lacie interface allows for folder sharing, then it could behave similarly and in truth, I'd expect your chances for success are greater as it likely uses a form of Linux at its core.

You may want to see if there is an fto (file transfer protocol) option for your drive or even ssh (secure shell) access as discussed the the thread linked above.

Typically the differing file systems are the hurdle to overcome, hence SAMBA was created to give interoperability between Linux and Windows system for the sake of file and print service access.

Thanks for the link very useful info.
I'm wondering if I could ask someone to make a .deb of the linux drivers so that all ITT users who purchase the Lacie 1TB Ethernet hard drive can quickly and easily connect to it remotely.
What do you think?
Dan
