Ha! you would ask :-)

One can edit the boot parameters of the liveCD (there are screen prompts how to enter that, IIRC - see this, no idea if it is current as I long last used a liveCD). You need to add "nomodeset" (without quotes). There may be other graphics related tweaks you can apply depending on graphic card. Search is the way forward on that.

if trying to find a distro which could be ...flexible...and feasible for the n900...
and solyd was too much...
my best suggestion would be antix .
Excellent distro...
a rolling systemd-less debian distro...
got it on 2 harddrives for my laps..
one...my fav convertible ..runs like a dream...
the other a laptop predating 2000 ...with about 256mbs of ram...and it runs like a dream...
it needs very little ram..
I think it'll run on 64 mbs of ram actually..
very very clean , smooth running and flexible distro...
absolutely no work has been done for arm at all...
so it is an open book to be used and abused..

Running a Sega Genesis emulator on my HP Pro Tablet 608 G1, the 4:3 screen ratio enables you to enjoy the games as they originally were.

No disrespect intended, but in my book this doesn't count as running a Linux distribution on any hardware.
The only hardware you're running it on is the emulated VBox hardware which happens to pass-through the host's CPU. You can even transfer the VBox image to any other amd64 computer that has VBox installed, regardless of how Linux-compatible it is.

It would seem 64bit/Android 6 support for libhybris exists, just not yet merged from Ubuntu to upstream (https://github.com/libhybris/libhybris/issues/320). Suppose it depends if they have conflicts with their own in-house version.

Hopefully we'll see some official update on status before long so new hardware can be supported.

Too late for Ubuntu Touch.
Judging by activity for the past three weeks,
Ubuntu Touch has just gasped its last breath.
Ubuntu is not particularly open development,
a lot of what goes on is hidden behind some egos we cannot see.
There is no "Come and see our code":
it all appears to be based on mailing list + IRC collaboration.
I cannot count the times I have chased some telefony reference
up into the canopy of the Ubuntu junglescape.
Lacking any 'open' means of recoding normal linux apps
into functioning in an Apparmor prison under an
abandonware display driver,
the absence of any serious applications creates a deafening silence.
All said, the only useful point of carrying a Ubuntu phone
is being able to listen to music.
Roughly 8% of all the "apps" on Ubuntu touch are for music,
but most are not even applications-
- they are merely links to websites.
[background on UT 'unfixables':
Browser fails on far too many points,
they have locked out any reasonable email clients
and the way multitasking has been shackled into the dungeon
means that nothing else can work.
VPN still shows your ISP where you are trying to go,
and still fails in far too many ways.
Privacy on a Ubuntu phone is a joke not funny at all]

Expect an announcement sometime in 2nd quarter of 2017
of Ubuntu abandoning their efforts in "Touch"
or anything else related to mobile content.
Convergence just died.

considering all of the valid points you just made about ubuntu and touch...
being a little claustrophobic in its constricted nature...

the death of touch...or shall I reverse it and say "the touch of death"..... nyuk nyuk nyuk....
and consequently of buntu convergence...

is

A- not only an obvious ultimate destination ....considering...the closed natures you spoke on at length...
since I believe such closed and hamstrung crap only impedes any kind of convergence ...full stop.

and also..

B- considering...I think it for the best...that buntu touch dies...
some other entity will consider such an endeavor and do it properly...
and hence...
rule the universe as a result.
