Hi,

I picked up an N800 about six weeks ago, and haven't had any problems until now.

I upgraded to OS2008 with no problems when I first got it, using my PC (running WinXP). However, now when I try to run (and reinstall) the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Updater to reflash the OS, I keep getting an error in DotNetInstaller, saying it's encountered an error and must close. I get this error four or five times during the install, and also when I try to open up the application.

I'm at my wit's end...I know it must be a PC software issue, and the only workaround I can come up with is to update the N800 on someone else's PC.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

why u don't try downloading the os2008 flash image and choosing it from your pc? try in this way

Slippy, it sounds like there's a problem with the .net stuff installed on your PC. Microsoft's .net package is used by the Update Wizard, and I know it's caused problems for other people in the past.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but perhaps it might help if you reinstalled the .net framework package on your computer. You might want to check with others if this is a good idea though, as I'm not an expert on this at all.

Just to let you guys know. I bought a n810. Played around with it for 24 hours...then tried to install the skype app (the whole reason I bought it) and kept getting an error message to upgrade the operation system...when I checked the upgrade app...it said that it had the most recent. Not satisfied and determined to get the skype working...I went to Nokia.com. Found the Flash 2008 update. I flashed my 810 and then decided to reflash it...oppps....so try to turn it on???? won't turn on. Try and charge...won't take a charge. I didn't do anything else to it...no falls...no liquids...so...I call Nokia, they tell me to ship it to them it is under warranty. so...I had the well documented power up prob with a touch of the flash prob...that's all I have...what do you guys have for me. What is going on with these gagets? Should I be glad I bought it?

Hey krisse,

Thanks for the advice...that was exactly the problem. I uninstalled Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 and 3.0 (you have to do them in reverse order) and then reinstalled them, and then reinstalled the Nokia Internet Tablet Software Updater. The flash to the new OS went perfectly.

Great to hear it works now! You're not the only one who has had trouble caused by .net, it seems to be the main "weak point" on the update wizard. I don't know how much control Nokia has over .net as it's made by Microsoft, but if it's unreliable then maybe Nokia ought to stop using it in their software.

Speaking as someone who reviews devices professionally, it's pretty common for the first ones off the production line to have some sort of problems, especially if they're pre-production prototypes (which get sent to reviewers occasionally). The very first N810 firmware caused problems for a lot of people when trying to install Skype, but the updated firmware dealt with this (at least it did for me).

Firmware updates usually fix any early problems, and if you can't update the firmware then there's probably something physically wrong with the tablet, in which case you should ask for a free repair or replacement as these things do come with a 1 year guarantee.
