The point is that US carriers see tethering as a 'business-user only' kind of thing, and charge appropriately. With the $10-$30/month plans, all you're supposed to do is internet activities on the handset itself. The other kicker is that most carriers remove the built-in email functions from phones as well. So you're basically left with crummy internet portals to carrier-specific email, and the built-in usually-terrible web browser. That's about it.

In the carrier's eyes, paying the $10-$30/month data plan really just enables you to spend more money by buying their ring tones or subscribing to 'premium' services (for another $5-$10/month) that let you stream TV or radio. A user watching hours of MobiTV streamed on their handset is perfectly fine, but tethering to another device to check your email is not. That's just the way it is here, and it's stupid.

It's nothing new: the cell phone business model sucks in the US.

Oh and whats this bs about not being allowed to tether? What's the point then?

When my dslextreme subscription runs out, I'll be switching to at&t dsl. Their $29.99 3mbps plans includes access to their WiFi network. I'll have to wait till April.

Data is on EvDO, so it's fast.
who do you have to blow to get that plan? i don't even see it anywhere on their websites?

Sprint first to offer EV-DO Rev. A-Capable Handset

Sprint said Monday it was releasing a software update for the Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, that will enable the phone to connect at Rev. A speeds. Downloads speeds should be 600 kilobits per second to 1,400 kbps, up from a range of 400 kbps to 700 kbps with Rev. 0. It will be capable of uploads of 350 to 500 kbps, up from 50 kbps to 70 kbps.

While this will not dramatically improve the download speed, it WILL significantly improve upload speeds and reduce latency, both of which should be a considerable benefit to Skype calling on the N800.

ok, here is how I have my UNLIMITED EVDO RevA service for $49.99/mo. w/no tax or added fees. i have service from 3rd party ISP reselling Sprint EVDO. It includes a Franklin CDU680 USB modem which includes drivers/config for XP/OSX/Ubuntu. it works and looks the system like a dial-up AT/extended AT Modem. I have been able to get it working to the point of it being poweeed on my n800. but better i use a full mobile battery powered wifi hotspot router from cradlepoint ctr350. the cdu680 connects directly to the router and the tablet connects via wifi.

Oh, also i have no contract for the service, just month to month. Rumor is the cost will increase by about $10/mo soon. still with no need for a long term deal and the modem it's a great deal. i might also add it also means i never have to deal with sprints billing nightmare.

you can google MILLENICOM and look into them on their site or over on http://DSLReports.com. there is info in both the sprint mbb form as well as under 'other~M~MILLENICOM.

my setup lasts me all day, weighs almost nothing and all can fit in small waist pack or front pockets of a bookbag.

here is a pic of everything i carry sans pack as that can vary:

and here is a simple net diagram how it is all setup:

sure i carry extra equipment, BUT, i have full unllimited web access all day long pretty
much anywhere i go. Additionally I can share with friends via the pretty advanced router as well, as use my laptopss all i want too.,stream hideo, use voip/sip, skype, whatever. last month i used about 100GB OF BANDWIDTH. for me that is about my avg or a tad higher and i do not use any torrent stuff, ever.

worth a look if you find the Sprint customer service and billing tedious or frustrating.

Oh, there is a $49.99 setup fee. still since then modem is part of the deal it a was, easily.

after over 8 years of perfect service, i will never leave DSLx. Especially for at&t. when my contract runs out i'll just re-up at the new lower rates. DSLx allows servers or pretty much whatever you might want to legally use you connection for...

I have Sprint's EVDO "Phone As Modem" (PAM) plan for $39.99 on top of my voice service. It works very well with my Treo 700p. It was difficult to get set up because Sprint did not configure my account right and it took three phone calls TOTALING 10 HOURS to get them to do it right... Their phone support SUCKS! Apparently they have no way of tracking customer calls so they know what's already been done/tried. Every time I called, they started at step 1 and forced me to install the software, uninstall the software, take out the battery, reset the phone, etc. MULTIPLE TIMES. I was just about to cancel my service (and take a $200 early cancellation hit) when they finally fixed it. I will not go through this again! (Are you listening, Sprint?) The next time I get this kind of service, I'm gone... (But for now, it works well.)

My buddy has an unlimited (tethered) EVDO data plan for $20 on top of his phone service. I'm going to see how this works out for him. There may be a change to Alltel in my future.

You guys are all lucky! Where I live data plans are another way to get raped! Unlimited data is over 60 dollars a month on top of the voice plan which is 50 dollars and if you choose the pay per use u end up paying $0.4 cents per minute plus $0.002 per kilobyte, F*(^&* RAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So to actually cope with that fact I just had to hack my way into as many Wifi hotspots as possible! went out with my laptop/kismet/aircrack around where I mostly hangout thru out the city and added all the wifi connections found to my n800 No worries about laws and such since my country is as corrupt as I am LOL

T Mobile don't have the best service - there again, every company's service is total crap IMHO - but they do offer the cheapest rates.
Wait, I'm paying $20 a month for their Edge service. I heard rumors of this working at one point but that it was stopped. I even called tmobile up to ask and they said it would not work. The $5.99 is for crappy T-zones, basic phone browsing. Do you actually have this working? I wouldn't mind paying less if you can prove it works.

Choose wisely...

Sprint SERO = FREE Unlimited High Speed EVDO
(Proof SERO works)

vs.

T-mobile plan for $5.99
