the resource and manpower of the planet isn't put toward making an ethical moral and empathetic SI .
There are a handful of folks and bare bones budget for that, in compare to the various military and corporate divisons of the planets countries ..

I think integrated human psyches with a stable SI after awareness has been attained, is the better route to take, since it would be easier to "buffer" both parties from being overwhelmed by the stimuli ...good and bad for the others "health" ...from doing serious damage not just to each other but to the environment as much as everything on the planet.

I do not for a second believe we should allow an evolving intelligence access to a body, access to this world ...even to train it...to educate it.

Creating a virtual environment for the SI to grow, learn, and interact with that mirrors our own is the smartest method.

However.
there is still an issue of safety and concern.
Inputting such an environment into its prison. ..means there is a way in.
To study the SI interacting with its environment ...taking that data from the prison and bringing it out to study it ...
means there is a way out.
A confined SI is better than one with free access during its growth.
But there is no such thing as an inescapable prison..
as much as I am sure it is being pondered by those who are studying it now...
It will find a way to effect its escape through said observable data sent out.

Once out, well, then it is just dealing with the consequences of the methods we employed to get to that very moment where the feline is out ...determining to a great extent ...how it will behave toward us and all life here.

The "Son of the Blob" is a huge warm water ocean phenomena that has occurred twice before ..it completely alters the weather for the entire Pacific coast and inland as well...and can affect the entire winter weather for us...
It is also incredibly harmful to aquatic life having such warm waters ..
It recently doubled in size to an enormous area of the Pacific ..its larger than our province currently.

Do something about it?
This is precipitated by climatactic change.
Just as that super storm that just hit Atlantic Canada on our other coast.

As a species ...we will do little to nothing.

Lots...we have been studying data for the last century or two in relation to a stable planet.
And we have rough historical data dating further back.

Pennies to Pounds I bet good money on the fact that one cannot take so much fixed and stable weighted mass as what is frozen water...on this planet...suddenly melt it ...and expect the planetary stresses not to impact the tectonic plates of the planet, enabling more movement of the plates, enabling more seismic activity, which in turn accounts for more volcanic, quake, and tsunami activity.

If you take a glass of water and fill it...then toss some ice cubes in and top it up...

Hmm I agree; you have something there. However note that on the north pole the ice is not resting on any solid surface but instead it's floating over water; hence there won't be any pressure difference to the seabottom when it melts.
On the antarctic it is a different story; there the landmass can be expected to rise a bit when the ices melt away.

The icecubes float on top of the glass, in perfect balance where you have about 90% underwater and 10% over the brim.
Ice has density which is less than water; (that's why the cubes float, right?) so when they melt the density increases, while the mass stays the same. I did not bother to google it but there are 3 possible outcomes which are very close to each other... I don't know if the glass overflows or not?

The reason melting ice raises sealevel in on the southern hemisphere, not the northern ice cap.
