Hi, I've had my N810 for a week now and invested a lot of time looking into various mods/customisations.

The OS interface is very intuitive and I'm happy with using the stock functions.

But I've been looking without much success (here, with the ITT search tool and on the wider web), for a beginner's guide to file manipulation, XTerm, 'command-line' and so forth.

ATM, I'm trying to create a shortcut to reboot from this thread : http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...+reboot&page=2

... but I'm too new to this OS to know how to create an .sh file and some of the other things mentioned in the thread.

Would anyone be able to point me towards some kind of guide ?

TIA

The things you are asking about are general linux apps, commands, etc... so I'd say ITT isn't the best place to look for information for that. You can figure out quite a bit about how to do things from this forum, but for the basics I'd look for a beginners guide to linux, maybe from O'Reily. Perhaps some one else will post with some direct suggestions, rather than my vague answer.

some simple info that may or may not be helpful:

file manipulation:
you can do this via the file browser or the command line (x-term). using the file browser has some limitations, while command line takes some knowledge of... commands.

XTerm:
a program that comes preinstalled that gives you the command line.

command line:
the place where you can manipulate your entire N810 into submission, or just brick it. just kidding, kind of. for the most part this is where you can control/change things in a very powerful way, but it takes some getting used to. For most important changes you will need complete access to your tablet, which requires you to become root. There are various ways of doing this, and I'd recommend searching around for answers - that way you'll learn a bunch of along the way before having to power to f*ck up your tablet.

You should also look around maemo.org for some answers to your questions.

Good luck, and please use this forum. For the most part people try to help w/out being too snarky, but sometimes it's hard to resist. Eventually you will want to just tell people to search. again - find a beginners guide to linux as a start:

cheers

There are many threads that discuss issues such as this. I did a search for 'xterm command' and found several, including discussions yesterday that touched your request one hit is http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=14822
