I'm missing something simple and fundamental. Where are the xterm commands like: unmount, mount, sfdisk, fdisk, and so on? I suppose they must be in a repository somewhere, and I have to download and install them. Where are they? Any tips?

Thanks

Do you want the Busybox versions or the GNU versions?

There are ports of both a more complete Busybox (the version shipped is trimmed down as far as possible to save disk space) and GNU utils available. See http://downloads.maemo.org/, announcements here and Google :-)

You need to be root to use them. To do that install the gainroot package, or flash the tablet in R&D mode, and then type 'sudo gainroot'.

Indeed, iamthewalrus makes a good point: /sbin and /usr/sbin are not on user's PATH, by default.

Out of the ones you list, by default there are:
  1. /sbin/sfdisk
  2. /bin/mount
  3. /bin/umount

Thanks for the help. I have found BusyBox compiled for the SDK and for Sandbox, but nothing yet for the IT. Still looking. Nothing promising yet for GNU utilities. Still looking.

The IT _comes_ with busybox. Most (all) of the commands are installed by having symlinks to the busybox executable. This is out-of-the box, no messing necessary...
