So, are you saying we should evaluate software differently just because it is free? The OP has gripes with the map management and UI of Maemo Mapper, but you don't address that, you attack him for criticising Gnuite's program. It seems to me you're doing exactly what you're accusing others of doing: Attacking the person and not the issue.

I have the same sentiment...I like my N800 and find it quite useful, but I also realize that it requires a certain level of "care and feeding". By that I mean if you want it to perform the way you want and have the newest features, you have to spend a fair amount of time reading ITT, re-flashing it, downloading betas, etc. I think that is part of the geek-joy that a lot of ITTers get out of the device--we are a tinkering bunch by nature, I think.

For people who don't have that inclination, other products on the market might be better suited. (And yes, that means the iPod Touch or iPhone, as much as I lament having to say it...)

to me its the part where he holds up apple as the "gold standard". no corp on the planet deserves that, least of all apple. a in-house de on top of a modified bsd core, big woop...

call a spade a spade damn it, not a sword...

and btw, what os had a data losing error in its file manger code?

A large part of the evaluation of a piece of software (or anything for that matter) has to be its price, and something that would be bad in an expensive piece of software is less of an issue in a cheap or free application.

It doesn't stop something that is bad being bad, but it does excuse or mitigate certain things.

I used mapper going across the states on holiday last year, as well as navman on my old pocketPC. Mapper certainly has UI problems getting maps, but for the price it seemed very good.

This is one of the qualities of the N8X0 series that drew me in so quickly.

I think I agree with Karel for once But Maemo Mapper and Canola are very nice examples of decent free software, some of the game ports are nice as well. That said, MaemoMapper could definitely use a facelift or three.

Everything else is rather painful to use, free or not its just like stabbing yourself in the face with a spoon.

Two things happen: its the programmers preference of how the application should be rather than thinking like a normal user... or its just a plain mess of a port. I'm not faulting the community, there is no reason to have it any other way.

I hope with every new release of IT OS that Nokia will provide some solid apps but they fail to deliver. Maybe in a few more years if the platform is not dead we'll have 4 or 5 commercial quality applications!

P.S. Edit: I'm sick of talking about Apple vs. Nokia (Whoa!) I'd just like to stick to the merits of each platform! Even if they are few and far between

I think the former is a lot more prevalent. Most of the poor ports I've seen were listed as incomplete/alpha with intent to improve. Whether or not that improvement materialised, the warning was there.

As for the spoon-face-stabbing, some of them are probably that way, for newbies. Annoying and time-wasting, but no serious risk of injury.

Edit: Try Quiver? I'd have placed it in the top tier of user-friendly and polished apps.

Show me where I ever claimed such a silly thing, brontide. For the record, I have no hostility whatsoever toward Apple products or reviewers of their products.

My point was specific to the original post, which you were claiming wasn't being properly considered.

Look, I don't mind a challenge or two, but can we leave flawed logic out of it? Thanks.

Absolutely I do, Karel. I think the reasons are patently obvious why, too.

And I didn't attack the OP. I defended the freeware developers from an unprovoked attack. HUGE difference, one I know you're fully capable of grasping. Ergo, your insinuation of hypocrisy is utterly false.

EDIT: Karel, I find it difficult to believe that you're willing to defend this sort of statement:

Total joke??? Very hyperbolic IMO, and pure flamebait. You know that.
