Just read about Google Docs going offline with the google gears plugin and was gutted that google gears won't work with the Nokia tablet. I was thinking to myself having this as an option offline would fill the word processor gap that I currently have. I read a few of the threads that google gears would be difficult to port over to the tablet. Is that etched in stone or is there some room for optimism? Of all the devices that google docs offline could benefit the most, I'd have to say it would be a Nokia tablet. I've got Microsoft Word on my Notebook computer so google docs offline is less useful for that, but a simple browser office suite that works offline on the Nokia would fill in a lot of holes on the go for those times that I don't have a connection.

If I remember correctly, the problems were said to be that Microb is based on Firefox 3 and Gears doesn't yet support FF3. Google will definitely be working on getting FF3 support in there before Firefox 3 is released, so that problem at least should go away.

As for your laptop, just move all your existing documents into Google docs and benefit from the versioning, sharing and ability to create paper airplanes (look on the File menu for that one!)

Last time I tried gears it was painfully slow to use.

Wasn't there a port a while back that worked with reader?

There's a new version of Gears (namely 0.3.13.0) which supports Google Docs and FF3 b4+. Unfortunately no Maemo port yet.

I didn't see this in my Docs page. If you go into a document though, you will see something new in the file menu!

do you use english US as the language? you should get a few things at the top of the page if you have gears enabled.

I have English US selected (despite being in the UK) because there are several features of Google sites which require it. However in this case the issue is probably just that the rollout is gradual:
We'll be making offline access available to a small percentage of users today and will complete the rollout over the coming weeks. You'll know that you've been given access when you see an "Offline" link in the upper right hand corner of your Docs list.

Google Gears for the tablet does exist (someone ported it over). It works but it's slightly buggy though.

here's the link-

I've got it installed, but haven't had the time to mess with it yet and see how well it works. But according to others, the main problem is that microb doesn't like to start in offline mode, so sync gets messed up. The workaround is supposedly to leave the browser open...

offline mode might be a nice feature request at this point ;-)

cheers,
