I've had the N800 for almost two weeks now and it's proving to be far more useful than I'd expected. Initially the N800 was purchased to provide internet access and multimedia service. Within 24 hours I'd already found other uses for the N800 and I could see a bit more of its potential.

Today I'm ready to replace my laptop with the N800. While I can certainly do far more with the laptop I find that it gets used mostly for web browsing, email, occasional writing, movie/music player, simple games, and maps. The N800 does all of these things & more and it fits in a pocket.

I now have Google Calendar synching with GPE Calendar/Erminig. My personal contacts are stored locally and at Google. I have links set up to access all of my email accounts online (I prefer this to using an email client locally when on the go). I also have an FTP client app installed for up/down file access to my FTP directory online. RSS Reader, Chat, internet calling, and video chat cap off the N800's access uses nicely! I have the N800 set up to tether to my T-Mobile Dash for access anywhere.

I'm finding MaemoPad very handy for quick note taking and Notes for text entry to be used at a later time. Sdict with a selection of reference documents is very useful! I also keep a selection of .pdf references stored on the internal MMC. I find both the native Map application and Maemo Mapper useful - I have maps for both stored onthe internal MMC. I'm using Password Safe to store account and password information.

I have Mplayer installed as a video player and I'm using the native Media Player as an audio player. I also use the FM Radio feature regularly. The native Image viewer is working well for me so far. The camera is far from ideal for still images but it works for utility purposes. Maemo Recorder is very useful! I use both Sketch and MyPaint for drawing.

I have (2) 8GB SDHC cards installed allowing me to store more than 1,500 songs, 10 full-length movies, documents/ebooks, maps, pictures, more. Entertainment is covered.

I picked up an extra Nokia Charger for bed-side stand and travel use. I also picked up a couple of Tekkeon MP1550 4xAA portable power supply's and (8) 2500mAH NiMH AA rechargeables - this will provide more than enough recharge or battery time for the phone and the N800 for just about any situation. I have an iGo Stowaway bluetooth keyboard on the way for heavy text entry.

I have a padded Sony NX70V slip case that fits the N800 perfectly and holds my earbud headphones - I use this for daily carry. I also picked up a small, semi-rigid, and padded Kodak digital camera bag that now serves as my 'mini-laptop case' (I retro-fitted a sheet metal barrier inside the back wall of the case for full protection). It fits the N800+carry case, (2) chargers, (2) MP1550's, iGo keyboard, cables, earbuds, extra SD cards, and an extra stylus. ...and my T-Mobile Dash if need be. The whole thing is compact and lightweight - very portable! There will be specific circumstances where I will require having my laptop handy but only infrequently - the N800 seems the perfect solution for most of my mobile computing needs.

I can evaluate the importance of my N800 by this question. If it were stolen, lost or broken would I replace it? The answer is yes. My laptop is used far less these days, but it still has it's place.

Tomorrow I will go to a university "Media Day." I used to take my laptop to show audio and video examples of my work. Now, I'll just take the N800.
