I'm not sure if this thread should go here or in the Apps forum.

I have a N800 en route to me right now. I've had one last fall before, so I know more or less what it's about. Back then, I tried Canola and stuck with the default Media Player in the end; I'm wondering if anyone would care to offer a suggestion as to what I could use for music playback now.

If it helps, I use foobar2000 under Windows and Quod Libet under Linux. I'm looking for something that's fast and no-nonsense. When I tried out Canola in November (I think), when I was at the now-playing screen and tried to change the volume, I would get a "loading..." screen before the volume indicator would appear on the screen. I found that to be very frustrating. I don't mind it being pretty, but it's not a prority. I definitely do want the option to run both in windowed mode and in full-screen - I frequently use the browser while listening, and want to be able to easily switch in and out to pause and skip around tracks.

Support for gapless playback would score an app massive points, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I would not mind support for FLAC, but lack thereof is not a deal-breaker.

Suggestions? (Even a shortlist would be pretty awesome.)

Thanks.

edit: now that I think about it, it may have been Kagu "loading" the volume control. Either way, this is something I'd want to avoid, regardless which app is doing it.

Not entirely feasible due to the way the DSP works, but xmms meets the qualifications for "windowed"-mode.

Quodlibet can be run on the tablet, but the UI doesn't fit the tiny screen well.
If you're looking for gapless playback you might be happy to hear that the Canola guys are working on porting the xine engine to the tablets. Xine features gapless playback and crossfading but I doubt that this would work with DSP-based codecs (xine doesn't have them anyway).

mpd can do gapless playback, and mmpc can be run windowed.

XMMS can do gapless playback - there's also skinning, volume & track controls using hardware buttons, an awesome equalizer and pre-amp, and visualizations.

Thanks all - I'll try these when I get the tablet.
