I originally posted about this in the Newbie forum, but haven't gotten any replies. I thought that this forum might be a better place for my question. Apologies for the duplicate.

My goal is to use remind on my new N810. I'm wondering if I need to compile the program myself, or if someone has already done the work to make a .deb or .install for this program.

A search for remind and maemo turned up these 2 pages, which I don't understand: does the inclusion of remind in mud-builder make life easier for me? If so, where can I learn more about what to do next? (I looked at the mud-builder home page, but couldn't understand much.)

I attempted to compile the program myself. With some advice from the remind-fans email list, I used apt-get -install build-essential to put the development tools on my 810. However, when I run ./configure I run into a problem with grep: the error returned is
checking for grep that handles long lines and -e... configure: error: no accpetable grep could be found in /bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/user/xpg4/bin
Apparently the basic version of grep can't do everything it needs to do. I tried running apt-get install grep, but this returned a long list of packages that would be uninstalled, many warnings, etc, so I didn't go through with it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The development tools are really meant for scratchbox (a cross-compiling build environment for a Linux PC), not the N810. I did a quick-and-dirty rebuild in my scratchbox environment, so it's certainly buildable. I haven't tried to install it yet, and I don't know how useful it would be - from my readup it seems to involve alarms and stuff, and that probably wont' work out of the box. Anyway, I will report back if I have something.

Wow. From my ignorant point of view, what you did is basically magic. Let me now how it works out.

'remind' (the command-line application) runs (although I haven't actually tried to make it _do_ anything, other than showing me its command line options). But 'tkremind' (the graphical front-end) needs tk and tcllib, and although I can find tk for OS2008 I can't find tcllib for neither OS2008 nor OS2007. Do you use the graphical front-end?

UPDATE: I'm attaching the 'remind' debian package (the command line utility). It's built for OS2007 but I believe it should install OK also on OS2008. Note that the man pages and the documentation/examples are included in the package, but I believe that part will quickly be purged from the system by an automatic part of the OS which removes stuff installed in /usr/share/doc/. Will have to re-visit the 'tkremind' package later (the graphical front-end)

UPDATE2: Re-attached a new version, the only difference is that I put myself as maintainer and original maintainer as Debian-Maintainer, in order to direct any questions/problems with this package to me, not the original maintainer (who shouldn't be bothered with questions about a package he doesn't know about)

I installed the package you built on my N810 running OS 2008. It works! I only use the command-line version, so what you have done is perfect for me. Thanks so much!

Edit: I sent a link to your post to the remind-fans listserv, in case anyone else wants to play with it.

OK with the posting to the reminds-fans mailing list, but I thought it best to update my previous posting with a version of the package with myself, not the original Debian maintainer as responsible for this package.
