hello, this is my first post here and at the risk of ridicule here's my question. i want to use my new n800 to listen to internet radio, but i find that
the sound at its highest is not strong enough. with my laptop i used to plug in external speakers which worked marvelously, but when i tried the same solution with my new toy, no sound came out of the speakers themselves, it continued using the speakers that n800 comes with. now, i think that this might have something to do with that the speakers double up as an antenna for fm radio but i don't know how to turn that off since it's not really on when i listen to internet radio. please help!
p.s. another doubt i have is should i install canola, what is it exacty and what is this mysterious python that i have to disable in order to download it. thanks.

The function of the headphone jack as antenna is separate from the function as an audio i/o port. There's no link between having the FM receiver on and the playback output.

If you have the fmradio applet installed, it sometimes gets confused about where to play sound from; it has the ability to play out the speakers with headphones plugged in (in case you are using it as antenna only), or through the headphones. I recommend uninstalling that. Mediabox is said to be better (at not getting things scrambled, especially with bluetooth headsets) if you do want FM capability.
If you don't have the fmradio applet installed, then it could be a hardware problem, but you'd probably better try with different headphones or speakers...

Canola is an allegedly very nice, finger-based media player. I haven't installed it. Python is a popular scripting language, and it would seem odd to have to disable it for Canola... But I dunno, as I said, I haven't installed Canola.

Thank you Benson for replying.
I've tried what you suggested but it didn't seem to work. After erasing the fm applet all I get from my speakers is hissing and this makes me rather sad. I've also downloaded mediabox, it's like that canola thing I've asked you about? Well, I don't know what else to do. Listening to the internet radio was one of the things I had gotten the n800 for. If there's anything else you or anyone else can suggest, that would be great. Thanks.

Reboot after uninstalling fmradio?

Also note that you must remove fmradio through the Application Manager; just turning off the desktop applet isn't enough. (I can't tell which you did from your post, and I didn't think to mention the specifics before.)
.
Just to be clear, is it still playing out the N800's speakers? Or is it now trying to play out the AV jack, but actually only hissing?

Hi again Benson. I had uninstalled the radio as you had suggested. Anyway, I've discovered that everything works fine with another set of speakers I have, why is still a mystery to me, but as long as it works at all I'm happy. It was playing/hissing out of tthe speaker I'd connected to make it louder. Well, thanks once more. Liza
