For those that have trouble with this and have not figured out a way to use the search function from their N810 I discovered a way tonight. (This is probably obvious to some so just pass on by if you already know)

Basis:
ITT site, Default browser, classic theme, Keyboard (N810 or external)

Procedure:
Touch and hold your stylus on 'search' (You'll see the circular progress thingy) until the context menu appears, without lifting the stylus, slide up to highlight 'open in new window' and then remove the stylus. The advanced search page appears. Scroll down to reveal the entry boxes, select the box you want with the stylus and then with the keyboard, enter what you need to search for. Touch the 'search now' button at the bottom of the page with the stylus.

There may, of course, be variations on this that also work so feel free to add your even slicker methods!

Yeah, that is a good search page. (Thanks, dfinch. Thanks, Reggie.) I'd never paid it any attention.

There's no reason to limit what you say to N810s and ext keyboards; works fine for any NIT, with external keyboard or not.

For me, I can tap the search button with the stylus and press in my dpad to bring up the small search box and then tap the input box and press in the dpad button and search.

Yes, amazing but true -- search is much praised and insisted on here, and the convoluted process of actually searching with your Internet Tablet on this site has been achieved by some people!

I discovered the technique of using advanced search quite a while ago and I posted it somewhere. More useful to me is using Google and searching for the words "maemo" and the name of some program I am seeking information about.

I can't make it through the day without a dose of your cheery sarcasm.
