I would like to get my N800 (running Internet OS 2007 3.2007.10-7, the latest version as of this writing) paired up with my T-Mobile (USA) MDA. This is a Windows Mobile 5 device (OS 5.1.195, Build 14955.2.3.0). This is basically an OEM version of the HTC Wizard.

Unfortunately I can't get these devices to pair. When i go to the Phones control panel and click the "New" button, it searches for a device but the MDA does NOT appear. (Yes, I have Bluetooth turned on both the MDA and the N800, and the MDA is discoverable.)

The odd thing is, my friend who has a Nokia 770 (running the latest version of the OS officially supported on the 770) and an MDA (running the same version of the MDA firmware as I am) got his to pair just fine.

The MDA definitely supports Dial-up Networking over Bluetotoh, because I use it with my MacBook Pro to get online while on the road.

Does anyone know of some sort of trickery to get this combo to work? Thanks!

Hi,

It took me awhile (and the latest OS upgrade) to get this working, but now it is virtually flawless. Hopefully I can help you figure it out.

First, are you using Total Internet or trying to use the regular WAP connection? From what I have read, the WAP proxy won't work anymore, tmobile has closed it. I am using Total Internet.

First for the Bluetooth pairing. Make sure you have flashed to the latest kernel. There are some Bluetooth fixes that make this a TON more stable.

Here are the steps I took. From the N800 I turned bluetooth on and made the device discoverable. Then I did the same from the phone. From the N800 search for devices. You should find your phone. Quickly perform the pairing process and you should have a phone connection.

A note: I don't recall if you have upgraded your phone OS. But you should have the latest release from T-Mobile. If you have flashed with Crossbow then you will no longer have the DUN profile and will have use the PAN profile.

Another note: Sometimes the N800 doesn't show the proper services from the phone. There should be SPP, OPP, DUN (see note above if you don't have DUN and have PAN instead). If not then pair again, this time initiating from the phone. That worked for me the one time it occurred.

After you have paired go to the Settings | Connections | Connections on the phone and select Manage Existing Connections. The number for your selected connections should be internet2.voicestream.com. Select the connection and check that modem is 'Cellular Line (GPRS)'.

That's it for the phone side. On the tablet side go to Control Panel and select Phone. Select your phone in the dropdown, then select 'Edit'. Verify the Device Type (should say 'PDA') and the profiles (DUN, OPP, SPP). Note the Cellular Type will probably be blank. That isn't a problem and can be changed with GConf. Close this applet and open the 'Connectivity' one. Select 'Connections' and create a New connection. Note, the Phone Settings Wizard gets this all wrong so don't bother with it. Name your connection. Select 'Packet Data'. Hit 'Next'. The access point name is 'internet2.voicestream.com' and the dialup number is '*99#' The user name is '*' and the password is '*' (This makes a difference). Uncheck 'Prompt password at every login'. Hit Next. Now hit 'Advanced'. Select the Other tab. Uncheck 'Allow plain text login' and 'Use PPP compression'. In the Supplementary AT commands you should enter 'at+cgdcont=1,"ip","internet2.voicestream.com","", 0,0' And hit Ok.

That should do it for you. Change your connection and select the newly created one. Give it a minute during the initial connections. Sometimes it fails because the phone takes too long to respond on startup and you'll need to try again.

Final note: Occasionally the connection will be lost and the N800 will not be reflected of the status. When that happens, I make a phone call and afterwards the state will correct and you can reconnect.

Any questions? Let me know. Happy to help.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try.

I do have the Total Internet service from TMobile. Also, I am running the latest version of T-Mobile's official software for the phone (2.26.10.2, which was made available in July of last year [2006]).

Hey guys

Did you get your n800 up and running with the MDA? I have the total internet package and I can get my MDA to pair and work with my 770 but the connection always eventually drops...

I have the N810 and the tmobile MDA. I finally got the two to pair and connect to the Tmobile internet. It took about 2 days to figure out but I guess it was worth it. You definitely don't have to do all of the things that Dan listed. Once paired its just a matter of updating the "Tmobile Internet" with the proper username and 4 digit number password that was given at the time of pairing. I will try to explain below the process of getting it paired and connected because for some reason it didn't pair the normal way for the MDA. Please note if you already have your devices paired but just can connect and you know your 4 digit pairing passcode you can jump to the middle of my post which will tell you how to get the device connect to the tmobil internet.

DO NOT pair using the phone option under settings, for some reason the MDA will pick up the N810 but the N810 wont pick up the MDA for pairing when done under the phone option.

-From the settings click on the bluetooth option.
-Once there make sure the N810 bluetooth is on and visible and then click "devices", if it already has pocket PC there just delete it and then select new.
-Make sure your bluetooth from the MDA is turned on before you click new. Once you click new "pocket_PC" will appear right away. Wait for it to finish search and then select the "Pocket-PC" by clicking it twice.
-It will then give you the 4 digit passcode for pairing. At that point your MDA will ask you if you wish to grant access to the N810 and once you click yes the MDA will ask for the passcode. Enter the 4digit passcode from the N810 and click next on the MDA. Once that happens the devices will pair and the N810 will say "devices paired" after about 10 seconds (also write down the passcode so you dont forget it)._

Setting up proper T-mobile connection

Close all the windows by clicking close one screen and ok on the other. At that point your pairing process has been completed. The next step is setting up the connection because if you try to just connect without going into the settings it will just search forever or say connection failed. It does not officially connect to the MDA internet unless it says that and it usually takes about 10 seconds for the N810 to tell you.

-Click the connection signal at the top of your N810 and the click "connectivity settings"
-Click "connections" and then click the "T-Mobile Internet" and click edit.
The "GPRS" box should be selected and then click next.
-You will now see the connection setup:GPRS screen which is how you will get the N810 to connect via tmobile internet.
-The "Access point name may read "internet2.voicestream.com" if it does YOU MUST change it to wap.voicestream.com
-the dial up number remains the same which is "*99#"
-The username is "nokia" and you must type that in
-The password is the 4 digit password that you were given on the N810 at the time of pairing the two devices so please enter that in the password field
_Click next and you should get a message advising connection is complete and you can click finish.

Now you are ready to connect by click the signal icon and clicking "select connection".
-Click the "Tmobile Internet" and click connect. It will take about 10 secs and then you are ready to browse.
It does run a little slow but its definitely tolerable. Any questions feel free to email me.
