Hello Everyone,

I recently purchased a N810 and it's great so far. However, I don't fully understand some things.

N810 runs ITOS1008 which is a modified (crippled!) debian system. Correct?

Hildon is the default window manager on N810
Correct?

Other WMs can be installed (KDE, matchbox, IceWM, XFCE from what I saw reading around the forum). Correct?

Then, I've been told I can replace ash shell with proper Bash shell, but I can not find out where I can download and install bash for ITOS2008. Any ideas?

Also, many places mention installing becomeroot to get root access on the device, but I can not find repositories that provide becomeroot for ITOS2008. Where can I get this or how else can I root the N810?

Canola2 fails to start giving a: "Can't find libeet error". I found a deb for libeet on one of the canola2 repos, but app manager refuses to install it saying something about version mismatch/incompatible file. Any ideas where I can get this elusive libeet to get canola2 up and running?

Thanks for reading!

The community and Nokia generally abbreviates it as "OS2008". Yes, it is a Debian-based system (probably the most important change is swapping GNUtils for BusyBox).

Correct?
No, Hildon is the UI—an extension of GTK—and the API. Matchbox is the window manager.

Yes.

Add the repository from http://www.nitapps.com/

Grab easyroot from the repository mentioned above.

Thanks a lot for that bit of info! There are some really useful apps in that repo. Are there any other such 3rd party repos i should know about?

Also, is it possible to get gcc, and make on the tablet so that i can compile basic C programs? How about a Ruby interpreter? Sorry for all these questions, i'm still trying to understand how OS2008 works and set it up to my preferences.

Cheers,
Igs

About the canola question. There's a broken library dependency. libeet is upgraded but canola obviously has no way of knowing about this.

there's a fix detailed here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...7&postcount=19

Thanks for pointing me to that post, now I fixed Canola and its really great! I also figured out how to install the compiler snd related tools. Its a simple matter of apt-get install gcc as root.

The tablet is getting closer to giving me the same functionalitty as my laptop,, its amazing!

Thanks for all the help guys,
Cheers,

I have a (somehow off topic) question on this "becomeroot" or "easyroot" utility.
As a regular Linux (ubuntu) user on the Desktop, I am very used to the "sudo" command.
I also use it very often on my n810 and I have the impression that I am able to do anything using "sudo"
Is there any real difference between "sudo" and "becomeroot" ?
If sow, what is it ?

Finally, I would also like to replace ash by bash, but I red that it is a risky business. Is it ?

Thanks

Hi xvila,

I replaced ash by bash for user root and user "user" without any problems. However, i would not recommend linking /bin/sh to /bin/bash since this might (and probably will) cause problems and I really do not see any need for this anyway.

Thanks lgs

I am not sure, but I think that I needed bash when I tried to install tetex. Aparently, the tetex post-install script was looking for some bash command that was not available in ash.

Other than that, it is true that ash is enough
