I have a rather nice sony clie UX-50 which has a thumb keyboard on it. It had been sitting in a drawer until recently. I am thinking that it might still have some utility. I want to know if anyone knows of a means of pairing the UX-50 with the N800 to serve as a keyboard. It would save me buying a BT keyboard for the n800.

I think I know the answer to this, but ask anyway. The clie runs palmos 5.

Not necessarily. But not necessarily not, either. I know that some phones have an app that provides remote control capabilities via HID; if you can find something like that, it's likely possible.

I found something that might work, but I am not sure. It is called BlueRemote. I see several on-line sites that I can buy it from. It is $14.99. I am going to put the trial to test and will report back after I give it a try.

So far my efforts to use my sony clie ux-50 as a keyboard for my n800 have been blocked.

The requirements mention:

Any PalmOS 5.x device with Bluetooth radio and 150 KB of free memory. A device with a QWERTY keyboard is recommended for maximum fun.

The UX50 runs the latest Palm OS version 5.2.1

But the list of supported devices however, only includes:
Palm OS Hunetec H500
Palm m550 Tungsten T
PiTech Qool QDA-700 Sony CLIE NX60
Sony CLIE NX70V Sony CLIE NX73V
Sony CLIE NX80V Sony CLIE NZ90
Sony CLIE TG50

No UX-50...

I did find something, the opposite of what I wanted: xkbd-bthid : a software Bluetooth HID Keyboard... This runs on the tablet or other unix boxes.

I have written an email to support :

I really want to pay for this software. The possiblity of using my sony clie ux-50 as a bluetooth keyboard for my Nokia n800 makes me very happy. It is not listed as supported. I downloaded the software, installed it and one of two scenarios happens.

1. if the bluetooth radio is on, the screen blanks.
2. if I have the radio off, it turns it on, but does not succeed in initializing it.

Please tell me the author has a fix for this. Please tell me that I can buy this software in good conscience. I will gather any debug logs that are required. I will help with the testing, but get this fixed.

Thank you,
JJG

I wonder if xkbd-bthid could be ported to palm??? I wonder if the author of blueremote is willing to change this software so that it will run my clie?

Using the ux-50 as a keyboard for the n800 just makes sense. I have a nice man bag that I carry my gadgets in. I have a Blackberry 8830 for internet, a samsung sph-m500 for voice and text, I have the n800, and what is missing is a keyboard. The clie just takes it up a notch by allowing me to run software (games) that the n800 just is lacking. Furthermore, the BB has my contacts , calendar, and emails from work, I can get email and maintain a contact list on the clie if I desire, but it is certainly not necessary.

My luck on this project has been poor. I was not able to get the clie to pair with my sph-m500, though, and this bummed me out, I did get the 8830 to pair with the clie, but not establish a network connection... So my idea of composing my text messages for the sph-m500 on the clie using the sms app yielded nothing. Still, I want to make this work. It is just too cool to have a smart keyboard.

Night night,
JJG

The phones that have built in HID capabilities are Sony Ericsson...

But thank you for the idea. I found most of what learned after reading this quote.

Man, attactive offer, but I love this device. I understand why you would want my ux-50. I bought it new and have had it for a while. It has been paired with a variety of different phones, including a Nokia N-gage. I also have a 2Gig MS inside of it. It can recharge through USB with the case I bought for it...

I just sent an email direct to the developer of BlueRemote, he lives in Budapest. I so wanna make this work.
