Yes, most of the stuff is just upgrades. There's a little bit of new stuff for IPv6 and WiMAX, but it doesn't add much weight (maybe a couple of megabytes on the high end).

Nope, sorry.

OS2007.x/maemo 3.x = Bora
OS2008.0/maemo 4.0 = Chinook
OS2008.1/maemo 4.1 = Diablo

We know at least one more codename for sure, Elephanta, and the one after that is maybe, Fremantle. Presumably Elephanta will correspond to OS2008.2/maemo 4.2 and Fremantle OS2008.3/maemo 4.3 (Edit: Jaffa may be right about there being no 4.2 or 4.3 and Elephanta being OS2009/maemo 5.0, but I'm going to play the pessimist here and he can play the optimist—or he's the optimist and I'm the pessimist . . . depending on how you look at it ), or maybe Fremantle will be OS2009.0/maemo 5.0, no telling yet.

Fun Facts for Additional Obfuscation: OS2005 didn't have any (known) codenames, OS2006 had three (one for each point release), Mistral, Scirocco, Gregale, OS2007 had only one (for all point releases), Bora, and now Nokia's going back to one for each point release with OS2008. Who wants to take bets on which way they'll go for OS2009? I'm in favor of big cats for everything second point release.

Edit: Others were faster on the trigger, but I win for completeness.

I think that chinook is 4.0.x. Isn't it?

Ummm.... no.

Maemo = Development environment
ITOS200x (old naming) = OS200x (new naming) = Operating system
(Naturally, these update in sync, at least for major updates. Because you can't develop with different libraries than you're gonna run on.)

Code:
     Maemo (IT)OS
Version Codename Title
2.0 Gregale OS2006 (Apparently wrong... 2.2 maybe? Who cares?)
  3.0 Bora OS2007
  4.0 Chinook OS2008
  4.1 Diablo OS2008 Feature Upgrade
  5.0 Elephanta OS2009 (speculative)
Preemptive acknowledgement to all who were quicker.

Yeah, my gut says Elephanta will be Maemo 5.0, and OS2009. I can't see another major upgrade between now and the (hoped for) next device in (hopefully less than) a year or so.

As I said before, the reason for Diablo being *4*.1, is so that A, B, C, *D* == 4th letter of the alphabet == Maemo 4.x; Elephanta is the fifth letter == Maemo 5.x ;-)

Hehe, I didn't notice—quick, edit it before I get around to removing the "Thanks!" for bad information!

More Fun with Obfuscation: You could make the case for Chinook being 4.1 (since you didn't specifically say maemo), since it is actually release 2 (release 1 == 4.0, release 2 == 4.1, etc) of OS2008 (2.2008.50-2), as the public beta was release 1.

OMG sorry I asked. It was always a point of confusion for me with incompatible things switching from 2007 to 2008. Thanks.

On another side note since we have knowlegable people here: The openoffice thread mentions something about the /tmp file size. I think this solved by a openoffice setting and doesn't require 'kernel' modification. Just FYI (not really looking for a soluion in this thread).

Expect new hildon-application-manager

I've already compiled the new version for myself, now to see how it goes in diablo.

(BTW: I've pimped up the latest diablo initfs . Bootmenu, KotCzarny's colour mod, framebuffer and my name on it )

Note: When Diablo comes out, could someone distill out what others need to know from this 607-message thread? I'm not going to go through it since most of the stuff here probably won't be true of the released version... And as we know, there is a Constitutional provision against cruel and unusual punishment.

Why, like you said, almost all of the stuff here is either speculative or pre-release stuff that's irrelevant to the real release. Besides, you're always the one complaining about having to read threads, seems like you're the perfect person to make that unnecessary.
