I'm a reasonably experienced programmer with Perl, PHP and Visual basic. I want to write some custom software for myself at first, particularly a tailored contacts database with a graphic front end which will run in Windows and on the N810.

The only language which springs to mind is Python and one of the GUI kits. Does anyone have any experience/ observations on this? Any advice or pointers in the right direction?
(I probably don't want to run a local web server on either machine.)

python, pygtk, sqlite and a good persistance library will get you a long way, if not everywhere.

I fully agree. Mono would be too heavy for the tablet, but Python with PyGTK is just right. As a bonus, and if you take care a bit, your software will be able to run unchanged on any OS from 2006 to 2008, and even on your Linux desktop.

You can try Vala, it bears some similarities to C#, but is native.

Hmm, i think there's no Windows compiler for it yet.

Another near future possibility is XUL and XULRunner.
