I made it so that if you download the shareware demo data files in q2demodata.tar.gz (34Megs) to the root of your mmc card and extract it from there, it will create the quake2 directory are subdirectories on that mmc.
So for mmc1 that would end up putting data files in /media/mmc1/quake2/baseq2/pak0.pak
If you still have problems, run the game from xterm by typing quake2 and look for any error messages.
~ $ quake2 Quake 2 -- Version 3.21+r0.16 Adding game dir : . Adding game dir : /usr/lib/quake2/ using /home/user/.quake2/baseq2/ for writing couldn't exec default.cfg execing config.cfg cddir is write protected. console initialized. ------- sound initialization ------- sound sampling rate:11025 ------------------------------------ -------Loading ref_softsdl.so ------- loadlibrary("./ref_softsdl.so") Cmd_RemoveCommand: joy_advancedupdate not added recursive shutdown Error: couldn't load pics/colormao.pcx ~ $

it cant find the data... can you tell me what shows up when you type this command :
ls /media/mmc1/quake2/baseq2
You might try deleting any pak files other than pak0.pak
Shareware data comes with only 1 looping demo which plays automatically... you wont be able to play most other demos because they werent recorded on maps named demo1 demo2 or demo3 even if they look just like base1, 2, 3
Shareware data doesnt have any movies/cinematics.
You could always acquire the full version paks to get full functionality/movies.
You'd need full version for demos (replays) like latenite. If your just curious heres a youtube vid made by vidcapturing it :

It supports pixel doubling at default 400x240 fullscreen resolution, alternate resolutions including 512x384, 720x420 (fit for windowed), 640x480, 800x480, etc. and cinematics/videos work if you copy those over too (150megs). Multiplayer supports deathmatch, coop, and ctf.
N800/N810 only
MMC2 Version
MMC1 Version
If you don't own the game, but want to play the limited demo data, download this file and extract at root of whichever mmc version you downloaded. The demo data supports three levels, a looping demo (replay), and multiplayer (deathmatch/coop) on those three levels.
It may be a tiny bit slower than maqii but i cant really tell. If your happy with maqii then no need to use this, but if you want full functionality this build is available.
With menus you can alter your keybindings and settings and start multiplayer games. Although you can probably use the limited ingame browser to find lan games, if you wanted to configure XQF game browser to use this you should use these settings for quake 2 game setup :
Command line : /usr/bin/quake2
Working directory : /home/user/.quake2
If your configuration seems wrong, then make sure there are no unwanted autoexec.cfg or config.cfg files on your mmc2 quake2 dir and then run q2reset to revert to default bindings of :
ZoomOut - crouch
Fullscreen - jump
ZoomIn - next weapon
menu - objectives
esc - quake 2 menu
additional 810 bindings :
q : next weap
a : look up
z : look down
p : turn left
backspace : turn right
' : jump
- : prev inventory
+ : next inventory
u : use inventory
ctrl : console
CTF and DM support is in there but you need more than the paks that were on quake2 cd. In case you havent already got those you can grab the windows patch here which is a winzip self extractor... just open with winzip and copy relevant files.
Then you can launch dm from xterm like (i think) :
quake2 +set deathmatch 1 +map q2dm1
or ctf game :
quake2 +set game ctf +map q2ctf1
For ctf on 800 you might need to rebind a key to 'team red' or 'team blue'... on 800 just type those commands at console... i will look into making the ctf menu work with maemo buttons later.
Put any custom config settings in an autoexec.cfg file in the /home/user/.quake/baseq2 or /home/user/.quake2/ctf directories.
