I bought a used N770 with a lot of stuff loaded onto it. To get a hang of installing applications I ventured to install VNC viewer and some weather applet for the home menu.

Since then I can't use the browser. Upon launching the browser window opens and closes right away. I also have boot options when I power up the device to boot from flash or MMC or MMC partition 2. The browser works when I boot from flash or MMC but not MMC partition 2 which is where I booted from when I installed VNC and the weather thing.

I uninstalled Microb engine but that didn't help. The latest version of OS2007 is installed on the device.

See in /home/user/.browser what engine are you running. You can also change it there to see if the other works - opera <=> microb

I am actually on the latest version of OS206.

I executed

cat /home/user/.browser

and got 4 non-ascii characters printed on screen. I haven't touched anything Unix-related in over 10 years. What did I do wrong? The file exists. find /home/user/.browser finds it.

Could you tell me how to switch between text and command mode in vi on N770. Thanks!

That sounds like a corrupted file, do you have the wifi corruption fix installed?

Anyway, the file whouldn't be like this, you can try to copy it over from the other install. Sadly there may be other corrupted files.

I don't know if I have wifi corruption fix installed. Should I start clean by reflashing the device with OS2006 and deleting whatever is on the memory card? Is that a risky proposition?
