Apple has figured out that it's not about the specs and features but the usability and life cycle (in terms of usability) of a product.

So, let me get this straight, you can't just walk into a shop with $199 and buy an iPhone?

You have to sign up to a long term contract with a monthly fee?

If so, surely this isn't actually that big news, as there are already many smartphones which cost $0 with a contract, so the iPhone is still relatively expensive (it's just not AS expensive as it was before).

If someone figures out how to make that work, that'd be cool.

Completely agree! The $199 price point is amazing. I'm a developer and occasional hacker and appreciate the NT platform on many levels, but it has not lived up to what I was hoping it would be.

As said, the key is always software, and to reiterate, I will pay a fair price for software that does what I want, is easy to use, and easy to install. Unless Apple makes the foolish mistake of blocking software for stupid reasons, there is going to be a great library of great software for it.

The only hardware downside is the lack of an SD card slot. That would have made the hardware platform almost perfect.

Except (as far as I can tell) it ISN'T $199, it's $199 plus the cost of the contract which takes it into four figures.

Some contracts let you have a smartphone for $0, is that an amazing price point?

Things it's still missing, as far as I know:
  • official and secure-ish tethering solution (esp. one I can use with my N810).
  • Bluetooth HID (that would almost make me ok with it lacking a physical keyboard, as there are 2 or 3 bluetooth thumb keyboards I could use, and make a laptop-ish case out of them).
  • Memory card slot.
  • Bluetooth FTP (esp. with Bluetooth FTP to an iPod Classic).
  • usable SSH client.
  • usable VNC/apple remote desktop client.
  • usable chat program (SDK implies it'll be possible, but it's not there yet).
  • ability to sync with Google apps.
  • ability to sync with Mozilla apps.

Though, I do wonder if it's usable with AT&T's GoPhone plans. Get the $1/day plan, and just pay $20 every 30 days for unlimited data ... and nothing else.

Anyone know how many of the new iPhone features will make it into the next gen iPod Touch (GPS, etc.)?

That made me laugh

It's the truth though. I'm sure there may be some differences when consider how things are in other countries but in the U.S., one would be hard pressed to find a deal like AT&T/Apple have with the iphone.

Yes, there are many smartphones that can be had for $0 plus contract but those phones don't offer the user experience of the iphone.

It's not uncommon in the U.S. to pay around >$80 for unlimited email and web, with text and talk.

It wasn't too long ago that verizon was charging $45 for broadband access. I believe they just lowered it to $30 but there is a monthly allowance.

Before I got my iphone, I was using a verizon phone with tethering plan (40 for talk and text and 45 for broadband tethering with n800 or laptop) and n800. It was great but I found that I could go to AT&T and pay less and have most things that I need in one device.

I still use my n800 and it hasn't been replaced. I'm just saying that other companies need to smarten up...at least in the U.S.

Can't speak for other countries.

You can purchase an iphone. You just can't use it without signing up for a contract and activating it or unlocking it.

Well, that's not really purchasing though is it, unless I want to use it as a paperweight.

If I have to pay extra to activate it, then $199 can't possibly be described as a purchase price. All it is is an initial installment, a downpayment.

You're missing the point: this $199 figure everyone's getting so excited about is meaningless, because the total price of the iPhone has barely changed.

Add up all the total costs of the contract and it's pretty much what it was before, they've just chipped a bit off the initial payment.

In fact I'm surprised they didn't go for the $0 deal themselves, now THAT would have made headlines.

What I want to know is how much this costs on its own without a contract. I'm willing to bet it's exactly what the previous model costs.

Are you serious? I mean I don't buy a verizon phone and expect it to just work out the box. It has to be activated through Verizon's network in order to get on.

Am I missing something here? The iphone is a phone with more features...not an ipod with phone capabilities...geez.
