Has anyone tested the Palm player with Garnet VM beta 2? I'd like to get an Audible account, but only if I can find an easy way to play books on my N800. Can the books be downloaded directly to the N800, or do I (a Mac user) need to go through iTunes with a USB cable like the directions say?

(Total Audible n00b)

You do not need Itunes to download Audible files; Audible will provide you with proprietary software called Audible Manager that will allow you to load book files from your desktop hard drive through the USB link. Audible will also keep track of books you have already purchased and let you load them directly to GVM Audible Player.

Having said that, you should be advised of the drawbacks. Since GVM cannot see your SD drives, your storage space will be limited to the 64 mb allowed to a single GVM application. Also, there is a known GVM bug that requires you to reinstall Audible Player after every hotsync in order to reassociate Player with the N8x0 speakers.

You might want to consider purchasing a converter program such as Goldwave that will change the .aa file to something Canola can read in the native NIT.

The N800 is not a good device for listening to Audiobooks. None of the current media apps for the N800 have a "resume" function so every time you stop listening you lose your place. (This includes Canola)
The Garnet VM does not allow access to the SD card so even if you ported your .aa files to mp3, there is no way to listen to them as the Palm Desktop will only let you install mp3 files via Hotsync to the SD card. Pocket Tunes does not work on the GVM ( in spite of what it says on their web site).
So.. if you are like me and thought that the N800 would be a great device to listening to audiobooks you will be disappointed. I still use my Palm Zire 31 for audiobooks.

It happens, though, that mpd works just fine; unless you have tried all options, it's unwise to make claims starting with "None" and not containing "that I know of"...

You might try more of the options that are out there; I highly recommend mmpc/mpd, and think it might reduce your disappointment...

I usually modify my remarks, but in the case of audiobooks, I think I am on pretty safe ground. If you can set up mmpc/mpd without having to use the command line to get it to install and run, then I will stand corrected. If there is someone in this forum who is actually using this program on a daily basis to listen to audiobooks, I would appreciate hearing about it.

I don't run the repos, so if you can't get it to install through app manager, there's nothing I can do about that...

That said, if you want to give it a shot, I can help walk you through the setup. The way I see it, results are what counts, and having to use the command line to install is a minor inconvenience. It does not require commandline use to run.

I'll probably install it in one of my OSes to see if it still needs the command line for installation. (And report back.)

I don't care about whether someone is using Audible on a 'daily' basis -- has anyone gotten Audible format files to resume even a few times on a Nokia tablet? I personally don't care if people modify their every statement with 'as far as I know'. Isn't that true of virtually every statement people can make?

BTW: I have head that Goldwave can be used to convert Audible files to mp3 files, but the last I heard, this can't be done with current versions of Goldwave. Can anyone confiirm or deny this?
