Hi,
I am trying to use gmail with my Nokia 6682 phone and Nokia 770 ( with OS 2006).

I can connect to various websites using this setup, only hotmail and gmail does not work. I tried to edit etc/ppp/options. In order to do this I have installed Xterm and Vim. I think I am becoming ' root' since I have installed the 'becomeroot' package. I did not use the becomeroot2 configuration.

I become root by starting Xterm and typing 'sudo su-' . It shows Password , I simple hit " Enter ". When it comes to / $, I navigate to 'etc' then to 'ppp' then I type ' vi options ' to start the vi editor and try to edit the options file. The 'option' file opens up, I navigate to the end of it , use 'i' invoke insert option. Type mru 777 and mtu 777 then hit :wq ( Write and Quit Vi ) and then Esc key on Nokia 770 and immediately I get an error that says that I am trying to write a read only file.

Is there any easy way to do this? Can someone walk me thru this step by step ? Am I really becoming root ? How to write the ' mru 777 ' and ' mtu 777 ' to the etc/ppp/options file. ? HELP ! !

I don't think you're becoming root. You should get a # prompt not a $ prompt if you're root.
Make sure there's a space before the -

sudo su -

So today I start Xterm on Nokia 770 and then do the " sudo su - ". I then get to ' Nokia770-26:~#. I believe this to be the root, right ?
Now, I do an ' ls -l ' and it shows me:

' -rw-r- -r - - 1 root root 24 July 25 11:04 options '.

It seems that the ' options' is the only file there.

Anyway I do a ' Vi options' and it opens up and shows me ' mtu 777 on first line and mru 777 on the second line. I had entered this a few days back only that time I entered " mtu 777 and mru 777' with out the '#' in front. Is this what I should have ? Is this going to work or is it wasted efforts?.

I had to rename "options" to options.txt to upload it, save it as /etc/ppp/options on a 2006 OS, not sure if it is the same file on 2005, I never looked at it on 2005.

good luck,

PS , go to google and learn vi , its not that hard

Even after mucking around a whole lot, Gmail & Hotmail still does not work off of the GPRS/EGPRS for me.

I have Xterm and Vi installed. Following the instructions of people cleverer then me here, I start Xterm and at the ' / $ ' prompt I type sudo su - and hit enter. I get to Nokia770-26:~# prompt. There, I type ' cd .. ' and I get to Nokia770-26:/# ' from here I Navigate to etc/ppp/options by doing the following.

Nokia770-26:/# cd etc + enter

Nokia770-26:/ etc# cd ppp + enter

Nokia770-26:/etc/ppp# __ <----- Here I type ' Vi options ' and I get within ' options '.

Now I maneuver to the exact point in the ' option ' file as mentioned by ' penguinbait ' and type, ' i ' to ' Insert ' text within Vi editor . I type ' mru 777' , hit escape key on Nokia 770 and then hit the ' Enter ' key till I reach the point within the options File, where I have to enter the ' mtu 777 '. again I hit ' i ' to Insert text.

After typing ' mtu 777 ' at the required spot within the Options File, once again I maneuver to the end of the options file and type ' :wq ' ( to Write (Save) and Quit Vi). Now I hit ' Enter ' key on Nokia 770. I am brought back to the command prompt.

Even after all this and mucking around some more with the MTU and MRU values, I was not able to get to Gmail / Hotmail using the Nokia 770 and Nokia 6682 phone even though my EGPRS \ GPRS connection speed is quite good ( 126 Kbps down and 66 Kbps upload).
