The problem: I want to be able to click on a link in Opera with a given filename extension and/or Content-type and have a shell script run with the URL of the link given as an argument.

The shell script is written and is executable, all I need to figure out is how to configure Opera to do this.

Any pointers?

I guess you would have to write a plugin-type program to work as a content-handler. However, you would always have some sort of pop-up (I hope!) - just think of the security implications if what you are asking was straight-forward possible...

opera supports mozilla type plugins.there are a couple of plugin projects in sourceforge that allow meda to be opened in mplayer. I don't know what it would take to compile them or even if this is the kind of thing your looking for

I discovered the "File Types" section in opera.ini and have sorted it out. The docs on the Opera website has full details.
