I purchased my 770 in March 2006; a few days ago it happened: white screen of death.

What should I do now? I need some help working out the pros and cons...

I can't live without a tablet for too long, I need a replacement as soon as possible. So what are my choices?

a) Get a used Nokia 770: I really would love to. I still think that with its large hardware buttons and the hard cover to protect the screen, the 770 was the best tablet ever built. I probably wouldn't be all that happy with an N800 or N810. Downside: A lot of people seem to think like me, I watched auctions at ebay and they go up to €150-200 - very expensive for a device that's really old now. Plus: It could well be I get a WSOD on the new one, too.

b) Get a used N800: Could be a good choice, however: No matter where I look, I don't find any. So I don't know what they cost ATM.

c) Forget money, get an N810: Mhm. Sells for €350-400 here. That's quite expensive for me, especially considering that it doesn't meet all my requirements.

d) Wait until N900 (or N841 or whatever) hits the shelves... At least it could be Nokia learned from the N8x0 mistakes and make it more mobile again. Although I'd very much like to do this, I need a replacement before my summer holidays and I very much doubt the new device will be in the shops before July 25th.

You know what? None of these options sound very exciting to me, especially with the expectation that a new model has to be announced within the next 6 months (remember the N8x0 hardware is 1 1/2 years old!!)

What would you guys suggest? I think it boils down to "get something, no matter what, as cheap as possible before you really upgrade to the next model". It's just that this strategy doesn't work with the prices I see.

I never touched the n810 so I might be a bit subjective but here are the reasons I went for the n800 when all three of them were available:

- It's the same hardware as the n810 - so I'll get more software updates (even if a used 770 would have been much cheaper)
- I get two sd card slots (much cheaper memory and much more memory) as opposed to the n810 which gives me 2 gb + micro
- I don't get the transreflective screen (that's ok - I use it outside only for music), if I browse or anything I'll be in the share, I don't get gps - that's ok too - it's a feature i want it in my phone not my tablet
- better speed, ram and more reliable hardware than the 770
- standard usb cable - easier to make a host cable
- The only point I gave a lot of thought was the keyboard. I like keyboards, I have one on my e61 phone and use it a lot. But I didn't thought in the end that it deserves the extra cash. I can always buy a bluetooth foldable keyboard and still be lower than the n810.

You could probably get a used one with all kind of accessories for around 200$ or a new one for the same price.

Good luck !

Benny - I was in a similar situation 3 weeks ago.
I have a 770, and was holding off the n8x0 series because I wanted to wait for the "next step".
Things changed when I started to get interested in Canola - especially when the upnp plugin was released.
I felt the n810 was too expensive - so I wen't for a N800 on ebay.

In short - it's like having a whole new tablet. There is no direct comparison between the N770 and the n800. The n800 is so much faster - close to being fast enough for most websites (especially with the flash+adaware blocker plugins).

I would not wait for the next update - go get a N800. They are really cheap and most that are sold off ebay seem to be in good condition. I got a N800 + extra battery + 8gb sdhc card for 145 £.

I think getting an N800 for this price (145 £ = €183) would be fine, but there is none.
There's currently nobody shipping to Austria - except commercial dealers who charge between €250 and €300, which is def. too much for a N800 that's not even in a sealed package.

Anyway, probably the N800 will be the way to go... although I will miss the screen cover and the big, well-designed buttons of the 770.
I'll just have to hope that somebody puts it on ebay before I go on holidays.

As an ex N800 owner who's now upgraded to an N810, I can say the keyboard and improved screen make a big difference.

For isntance, chatting on Skype or Google Talk or even just typing in web addresses is a whole lot more easier to do. The on-screen keyboard on the N800 is awful. With my old N800 it would mis-read taps or double-tap letters for me.

The GPS is quite handy too, especially when combined with Maemo-mapper.

Plus the N810 looks nicer

The keyboard is the main thing though, it really is worth it.

You really like the N8x0 over the N770. I have both a N770 and N800 and the N800 is better all the way around.

You might loose the hard case (but you can always buy a hard case for the N800) but you also gain the built in stand. The N770 "plate stand" was a piece of junk and you never seemed to have it on hand when you wanted to put it down. The N800 with the built in stand is great.

Of course you are also getting faster hardware, you won't have to play Russian Roulette everytime you turn the N800 off, and there are more programs and continued support with the N800.

Look at the buy/sell section of this forum. There is usually a N800 sold each week here and perhaps someone would be willing to ship to AU.

Never used the stand when I played with other people's N800's ... it always seems to be at the wrong angle. Maybe I need to get used to it.

This is the one point that will make me buy an N800 instead of a 770. Now I'll only have to find a decent offer; at least a few ppl. ship from the US to Europe, and with the current exchange rate, the N800 could really be cheaper than a used 770 in Europe.
