Just to report that if anyone want to simply and quickly convert a movie from a DVD for viewing on an N800/N810, I have just used DVD Catalyst 3.5 and got very good results.

Simple to setup - has an preset for the N800 (which I tweaked a bit by upping the volume and kbps rate).

Auto crops black bars (so full screen movie).

Fully functioning 3(?) day trial (No text overlay or length limit).

Can't fault finished result (Syriana). Smooth and lovely.

It's so easy to use that I actually purchased the full version

P.S. I am not affiliated with this software developer in any way. Just reporting a 'heads up' for any interested parties.

Does it rip directly from the DVD? Is there a Linux version?

Yes it rips directly from the DVD. I don't know if there's a Linux version.
